Actionable Strategies CEO Jeffrey Wu discussed emerging financial industry trends, regulatory impacts, technology solutions and competitive landscape responses such as data aggregation and mobile touchpoints. The forum was attended by consulting firms around the country that work with broker/dealers, registered investment advisors and correspondent clearing firms. The event was hosted at Fidelity Investments Center for Applied Technology in Boston.
“Actionable Strategies was asked to provide insight into market trends and discuss non-confidential observations from our client base. We noted that continued sideways movement in domestic equities is driving strategic evaluation of other asset classes and international footprint”, explained Jeffrey Wu, CEO of Actionable Strategies. “Regulations such as Dodd-Frank and liquidity impacting mandates drove trading related actions in both processes and systems. However, uncertainty shortened planning horizons and recalibration of plans is ongoing. Annual plans are no longer locked which results in some thrashing in implementation project portfolios.”
Participants discussed macro trends in the market including volatility in fixed income markets that also impact equities. Changes in the broker/dealer industry were covered in detail. “The composition of broker/dealers tied with a shakeup of the competitive playing field in the clearing business will lead to significant landscape changes in the fully disclosed market”, noted Jeffrey Wu. “Niche providers will continue to seek opportunities to add value and partner with clearing providers who may eventually become direct competitors. These fluid market dynamics are testing the agility of many participants. On the product side, we are seeing mobile touchpoint continue to attract additional investment with the retail channels driving innovation back into institutional platforms.” The continued growth of RIAs as well as expanding requirements for hybrids are necessitating investments in both business and technology infrastructures to support evolving correspondent business models.
Technology was a prominent topic covered at the forum with workflow and data aggregation the most important platform issues. “Our work in master data management (MDM) provides unique insight into the processes around legal entity identifiers and supporting multiple hierarchies and account relationships. RIAs and hybrids have greater demands around flexible hierarchies that go beyond simple householding.
