Rechargeable NiMH batteries outperform other rechargeable batteries and have a higher capacity and less voltage depression. These properties make them ideal for use in hybrid vehicles, rechargeable portable equipment, and alternatives to disposable, single charge batteries that are used to power consumer applications.

The global production of NiMH battery alloy was around 70,967 Metric Tons in 2010 and a majority of this production was consumed by hybrid vehicles. IMARC Group, one of the world’s leading research and advisory firms expects that with an increasing demand for hybrid vehicles, the demand of NiMH alloys will reach 112,904 Metric Tons by 2015. This is expected to create a demand of 35,000 Metric Tons of rare earth elements.
A major finding from the report suggests that the rare earth elements - Lanthanum, Cerium, Neodymium and Praseodymium are critical components of NiMH batteries. Out of these four elements, the report expects a critical supply shortage of Neodymium in the short term. Findings from the report suggest that this supply shortage may significantly impact the production of NiMH batteries in the short term.
