With new traffic regulations and controls established lately in certain regions of the globe, consumers are moving from performance-related expectations to spaciousness and comfort preferences when it comes to multimedia facilities in cars. Arkamys develops and integrates audio software technologies which overcome some of the physical limits inherent in car cabins, and provides a feeling of immersion and spatial positioning of sounds for drivers and passengers, whatever the default audio system is.

"A major trend in Automotive is to make journeys in the car more entertaining for driver as well as passenger,” says Alexis Charbonnel, Automotive Business Development Manager at Arkamys, in an interview with Global Growth Consulting Company, Frost & Sullivan. "Today drivers and passengers have rising expectations of a radio that easily and seamlessly connects to their content, wherever it may come from, while at the same time preserving a highly enjoyable and immersive listening experience. Such considerations have a significant impact on car radio design, connectivity and rendering aspects, as well as the interaction with audio features. Arkamys is actively working towards this.”

The French-based company develops a series of audio bricks that range from basic audio features such as equalizers and other software components which compensate the speaker configuration by lifting the sound in the cabin, to a fully-flexible software solution that encompasses effects like virtual 5.1 or subwoofer to elevate the rendering. A hands free solution cancels the echo while talking on the phone and reduces the ambient noise in a phone call. These features can all be configured through a simple, easy-to-use Human Machine Interface (HMI) allowing for intuitive, thus more comfortable use of any audio source.

"Having an increasing number of audio functions made available from the radio is a real step towards a more enjoyable listening experience. And it has to be easy-to-use for the car owner, as today too many people do not know what these functions can do to their perception of sound while driving a car,” Charbonnel continues.

"With the help of Arkamys, car-makers have taken many steps to enhance the interface for improving the audio set up and make the functionality easier to use,” says Senior Consultant, Nicolas Meilhan from Frost & Sullivan. "This is a major ingredient for a more comfortable and enjoyable multimedia experience, and may soon become a standard in the market.”

The latest developments in multimedia, mobile connectivity and operating systems are significant steps in the direction of future audio consumption in the car. Vocal aid, vehicle alerts and noise generation for electric vehicles for security purposes are further elements Arkamys is working on.

The company is in close cooperation with the car as well as the radio maker to review and discuss adequate software suite. Arkamys and the radio maker conduct the integration phase together to make sure that audio processes coexist peacefully with other radio functions. Technical limitations at all levels are considered to make sure that passengers can experience the best listening conditions and that all their expectations are met.

Car manufacturers integrating audio software choose an alternative to optional Hi-Fi systems, which usually require additional material and cost as well as cause higher oil consumption for the vehicle. Arkamys’ set of audio software is complemented with integration and validation services to ensure robustness of the whole system. The sound engineers of Arkamys, the so called ‘Golden Ears’, define a tailor-made sound, create a specific sound signature and adapt the rendering to the local listening habits of the driver. This fine-tuning phase constitutes the final guarantee that the audio rendering is optimized for each car configuration and secures the level of comfort, immersion and emotion which passengers expect from any audio system.
