Representatives from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Japan, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and the United States met in Washington, DC on June 20–21, 2011, to define a series of collaborative, multilateral activities to promote energy management and improve energy performance in the industrial and buildings sectors.

A key part of the U.S. approach for promoting energy management includes the ISO 50001, the world’s first international energy management system standard. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 50001 on June 15, 2011. Coordinating with the release of ISO 50001, Energetics developed a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) website to provide information about the standard and supportive programs and resources in the United States. The website is an important initial resource for companies that want to implement the standard and continually improve their energy performance.

In the United States, the Superior Energy Performance (SEP) voluntary certification program for industrial and commercial facilities requires conformance to ISO 50001, along with additional requirements for achieving and documenting energy performance improvements. Energetics (energetics.com) has supported DOE’s efforts to develop the SEP program with the U.S. Council for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing (U.S. CEEM)—a partnership of prominent U.S. industrial companies, federal agencies, standards authorities, and technical experts—since 2007. As part of this support, Energetics helped to refine the SEP program requirements by providing technical analysis, meeting coordination, strategic partnership development, and organizational development support.

These activities have enabled the U.S. CEEM and DOE to certify five facilities that pilot-tested the program; develop supporting standards, infrastructure, a workforce, and resources to help facilities achieve certification; and raise the visibility of the program nationally and worldwide. The SEP certification program for industrial facilities will launch in early 2012.
