Cincinnati, OH, United States, 2011/06/01 - SHP Leading Design announces that the Children’s Home of Cincinnati High School was awarded LEED Silver Certification - SHP.com.
LEED is the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.
“This is a very exciting project for SHP,” Allison Beer McKenzie, SHP’s Director of Sustainability and Project Architect said. “The Children’s Home High School is one of over 40 LEED Registered or Certified projects for SHP.”
LEED verifies environmental performance, occupant health and financial return. LEED was established for market leaders to design & construct buildings that protect and save precious resources while also making good economic sense.
Located on a rolling campus in the Midwest, the new Children’s Home of Cincinnati boasts similar architectural finishes, including brick, to blend with the existing 100-year-old campus. The new school combines two unique programs for struggling students on to the central site. Given the make up of these programs, long-term durability and flexibility were major drivers in the design.
The new building incorporates numerous sustainable features, both inside and out. Nestled in a setting of old growth trees, there is a new amphitheatre to provide space for outdoor learning, lectures and assemblies. An art plaza allows students to showcase, display and celebrate the arts. Rain gardens help protect the water system while providing an aesthetically pleasing landscape feature. Rain water is also being captured in cisterns to help reduce water usage.
“An existing residential cottage was located on site and needed to be removed to make space for the new school,” McKenzie added. “A local organization, Building Value, was brought in to salvage building material for reuse.”
