• Dr. Peter Angood, Former Senior Advisor for Patient Safety at the National Quality Forum becomes GE’s PSO Medical Director.
• Advisory Board provides strategic guidance to one of the largest national PSOsv.

Dr. Angood is the former Senior Advisor for Patient Safety at the National Quality Forum (NQF). The GE PSO was recently certified as part of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) Patient Safety Organization program.

Dr. Angood is a renowned expert in patient safety who has previously had roles with The Joint Commission, Joint Commission International, the World Health Organization and numerous professional societies – including President for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Angood continues with NQF as a part-time consultant to help guide projects focused on improving national patient safety and healthcare quality. As Medical Director, Dr. Angood will provide expert advice on strategic direction and future growth for the GE PSO while also providing skilled insights on the development of reports and solutions that will come from the PSO. Dr. Angood will chair the GE PSO Advisory Board.

“The success of GE’s PSO will rely on its guidance, leadership, oversight and quality assurance,” said Kathy Martin, Managing Director, GE PSO, GE Healthcare Performance Solutions. “Dr. Angood’s knowledge and distinguished presence within the patient safety and healthcare quality enterprise will be integral to further refining the GE PSO. GE is looking to make a significant difference in patient safety through the PSO and Dr. Angood will be a key contributor.”

GE’s PSO Advisory Board consists of thought leaders bringing differing perspectives and years of experience in improving safety in healthcare and other industries. The Advisory Board consists of 12 members:

• Ross Baker, PhD, Professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto;
• Kathleen Ciccone, RN, MBA, Executive Director of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) Quality Institute and Principal in its DataGen, Inc. subsidiary;

“Despite the intensive efforts of the last decade, we all recognize the need for more systematic and sustained efforts to improve patient safety,” said Ross Baker, PhD, Professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. “There have been pockets of improvement in most organizations but these efforts have not made healthcare measurably safer for patients. Consistent reporting coupled with organizational culture change and focused improvements are needed. These elements are key pillars of the GE PSO. The collective wisdom and experience of members of the GE PSO advisory board and staff will help to guide these efforts. I believe that GE will increase the pace and scale of efforts to improve patient safety.”

Dr. Angood previously served as Chief Patient Safety Officer and a Vice-President for The Joint Commission where he oversaw annual development of the commission’s National Patient Safety Goals and several other enterprise-wide patient safety initiatives. Dr. Angood continues to work with the World Health Organization Patient Safety initiatives after having helped lead early development of the WHO Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions and a variety of other WHO Patient Safety programs.
