PPG Industries’ aerospace transparencies group is displaying its enhanced-design windshield for the Airbus A320 Family at the MRO Americas Conference and Exhibition at the Miami Beach Convention Center, booth 1439, through April 14.
PPG used new technology to improve field performance and to reduce maintenance downtime and the environmental impact of aging and removed windshields. The windshields are produced at PPG’s Huntsville, Ala., facility for original-equipment and replacement applications on Airbus A318, A319, A320 and A321 single-aisle airplanes.
PPG plans to introduce enhanced side cockpit windows for the A320 Family later this year.
Two new PRC® sealants from PPG Aerospace are used to improve moisture resistance on the windshields. Proprietary PR-2060 polyurethane sealant, which is added as an internal sealant and used behind the Z-retainer, has a low moisture vapor transmission rate compared with materials previously used in such applications. PR-1425CF chromate-free sealant replaced PR-1425 sealant as the outboard moisture seal because of its “green” formulation and faster cure.
To defend against delamination, S-123 urethane bonds the outboard and middle glass plies in place of a urethane-vinyl-urethane sandwich. It has a superior ability to maintain elasticity at low temperatures and prevent cold chipping, and it has high resistance to moisture damage.
