KSS Architects LLP won three Design Awards and a Service Award at the annual New Jersey Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awards ceremony.

The high number and percentage of awards is a rare accomplishment in the history of the awards. KSS won half of the six awards given in the Built category: one Design Honor award and two Design Merit awards. In the category of Service Awards, which are given to individuals, KSS associate Stephen Doyle, AIA, LEED AP, was named Young Architect of the Year.

The Human Rights Institute at Kean University in Union, N.J., won a Design Honor Award. KSS designed the 12,000 square-foot, three-story gallery and resource center as a literal and figurative transparent box. Pedestrians walking through the center of campus can see directly into its main gallery, which hosts exhibits, events and lectures by human rights scholars and leaders. Universal prose is engraved into the building’s masonry walls and slate flooring and expressed on a colonnade of glass windows.

The Tower Renovation at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration and the Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons at WHYY won Design Merit awards.

At Cornell University, KSS transformed a tower once used to “fly” stage sets in a former theater into a 14,000 sf, state-of-the-art research and entrepreneurship center for the university’s world-renowned hospitality school. The design added 10,000 sf of space by creating new floors into the 60-ft high clear space inside the tower. The top floor meeting room, now among the university’s most popular event spaces, provides one of the highest and best viewpoints on campus. On the building’s facade, KSS cantilevered a new slab to expand the building’s footprint and designed a screened curtain wall that opens up the once-solid limestone wall.

In Center City Philadelphia, KSS designed the landmark Hamilton Public Media Commons, an 8,300 sf addition and 5,100 sf renovation to WHYY Public Media’s Technology Center. A “learning lab” for students and the community, the state-of-the-art facility has classrooms and a 4,100 sf studio equipped with the latest digital media technology. On the exterior, translucent LED panels create a 25-by-68-ft facade, one of the largest U.S. installations of its kind. The programmable display gives WHYY a prominent digital canvas to show dynamic images and videos that correspond to studio activities inside.

The Young Architect of the Year award is given to an individual who has made major accomplishments in architecture within the first 10 years of becoming a licensed architect. Doyle, a member of Trenton’s Planning Board, has worked on several of KSS’ largest and most successful projects, including Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Scandling Campus Center and Empire Merchant North LEED Silver certified corporate headquarters and distribution center. He is the project manager for the planning and design of a new 1.2 million square feet distribution center for TEVA Pharmaceuticals USA, now underway in Philadelphia.

The annual competition is open to any New Jersey design firm and any firm with a project in New Jersey. Of the 80 entries submitted this year, AIA NJ presented awards to 11 projects in the categories of Built, Unbuilt, Design/Build and Interior Architecture. Projects remain anonymous throughout judging.

About 200 people attended AIA NJ’s annual awards presentation, which took place at the Carl Icahn Laboratory at Princeton University on Jan. 8, 2011.
