Stahl Construction was recently honored in a peer-reviewed midwest awards program as Best of 2010 “Higher Education Project of the Year.” The Best of 2010 competition, sponsored by Midwest Construction Magazine, a McGraw Hill Construction publication, acknowledges all project partners on the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Swenson Civil Engineering Building. It was the only project selected in the higher education category and will go on to national competition.

Out of 175 nominated projects in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, the UMD project took top honors in the higher education category for 2010. Only 22 projects received the “Best of 2010” designation. Projects were judged by a panel of national industry experts on safety, innovation, contribution to the community or industry, construction quality and craftsmanship as well as function and aesthetic quality of design. Ross Barney Architects of Chicago, the project’s lead architect, submitted the nomination. Stahl Construction served as general contractor on this project, but is known for its extensive construction management services and client advocacy from pre-construction to completion. The firm was founded in 1981.

“We are proud to be part of the team that has contributed to excellence in higher education design and construction in the Midwest,” said Wayne Stahl, President and Founder of Stahl Construction. “Our goal is always to exceed client expectations regardless of the building type and whether we serve as general contractor or construction manager. We love to apply our knowledge of construction and engineering to any design challenges.”

To achieve construction excellence on the UMD project, Stahl Construction (stahlconstruction.com), its subcontractors, the design, engineering and client teams had to work in tandem throughout the project to redesign components and provide innovative construction solutions to achieve the University’s goals for state-of-the-art structural and hydraulics laboratories. Building in the midst of an active and fully occupied campus demanded stringent safety precautions. The project also included rigorous plans and elements pursuant to LEED Gold Certification for sustainable design. The result is an aesthetically beautiful and educationally advanced learning and teaching environment.

The award winners will be featured in the December issue of Midwest Construction Magazine and entered into national competition with other regions. An awards ceremony will be held in December in Chicago. Winners of the National Best of 2010 awards will be featured in an upcoming issue of Engineering News-Record.

In the distinguished AIR Stellar Award program through the University of Minnesota, Stahl was also recently named 2010 General Contractor of the Year for its body of work on several higher education projects, including the Swenson Civil Engineering Building at UMD and the Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center (UROC) in North Minneapolis. Stahl was honored for exceeding requirements for the percentage of women-owned and minority-owned subcontractor participants on the project as well as workforce goals. As the first contractor to ever exceed women/minority business enterprise (WMBE) goals in Duluth for the University of Minnesota, Stahl exceeded the 10% WMBE goal with actual participation of 18%.
