Cancer cases will double globally by 2020. Oncology specialists connect and interact with each other at various stages throughout the cancer care continuum, all with the goal to provide the best possible care for their cancer patients. GE Healthcare, the business unit of General Electric Company, will introduce MD Connect, a revolution in streamlined oncology workflow at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in San Diego, California, Oct. 31 – Nov. 3, 2010.
Especially in the last few years, major innovations in oncology imaging and treatment have made it possible to treat cancer more effectively than ever. These new technologies have also brought the challenge of having to process and use complex information right through the care cycle. This sophisticated oncology workflow requires software tools that transform the complex into routine and routine into more efficient.
“Oncology care is about making connections,” said Paul Anderson, General Manager of Oncology for GE Healthcare. “It’s about making the connection between the disease, the treatment, the patients and the multi-disciplinary clinical team.”
MD Connect. Access oncology applications… anywhere.
MD Connect is a new innovative thin client solution that enables seamless workflow - from scan to plan -and helps improve productivity across the cancer care continuum. It is powered by the GE Oncology Server, which allows access to the complete suite of applications… anywhere.
In partnership with Varian Medical Systems, MD Connect platform is also planned to support Varian’s Eclipse™ treatment planning platform.
In commenting on this innovative solution, Jeff Amacker, Director of Clinical Solutions at Varian Medical Systems said, “We expect that the MD Connect solution, currently undergoing validation with Varian’s Eclipse treatment planning platform, will greatly enhance the treatment planning workflow for our users. Varian looks forward to continued innovation and collaboration with GE.“
In addition to helping oncology specialists connect to the tools required to screen, diagnose, stage, plan, and monitor treatment, MD Connect offers another innovation. It allows oncology specialists the freedom to access the full suite of GE Healthcare oncology applications wherever they need it - virtually any networked computer. They will now have greater flexibility and expand their ability to connect and collaborate with their colleagues on patient care.
“Over the past 10 years of collaboration, GE Healthcare and Varian Medical Systems have worked to increase the integration between imaging and treatment. Together we look forward to providing the next level of connected workflow for treatment planning,” said Scott Schubert, General Manager of Global CT Oncology at GE Healthcare.
