About Hess Corporation
Almost 80 years ago, one of today’s largest energy companies in North America started with a single 615-gallon 1926 used oil delivery truck. It was purchased by an enterprising young man named Leon Hess. Today, the Hess Corporation is a global energy company engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas and boasts offices in 18 countries, across six continents. The story of Hess is as much about achieving the American dream as it is about the energy industry. The company started with one man, his dream and a truck. Over the years, Hess' leadership has continued to show great foresight by investing in new technology that has supported steady growth over the past eight decades.

How did MiX Telematics improve driver safety?
In late 2007, Hess (hess.com) began a pilot program with MiX Telematics (mixtelematics.com) in North America to support the company’s transportation safety initiatives in North Dakota. Hess discovered oil in the state in 1951 and is now the third largest oil producer and largest gas producer in North Dakota.

From its inception, Hess has sought to be a socially responsible company. Part of that social responsibility includes transportation safety. MiX Telematics' pilot program in North Dakota began with the installation of 16 In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) units in their land transport trucks to support Hess' ongoing driver safety programs.

The MiX IVMS units installed in the Hess trucks were set up to track real-time driver safety data including speeding, harsh acceleration and hard braking. The information that was collected from the IVMS units was also used to generate driver safety scoring reports. These reports, which ranked truck operators based on their driving habits in specific categories defined by Hess, allowed the company to quickly identify areas of improvement and increase its safety standards with targeted driver training.

Part of MiX Telematics’ integrated driver safety solutions for Hess included driver identification and access control. Our Driver ID solution, or what we call a driver key, identifies a driver before granting that person access to a vehicle. By verifying that a driver is certified to operate a truck, Hess has greater confidence knowing that only qualified drivers are on the road and that they have received proper training to operate their specific vehicles.

In addition to the IVMS, each Hess truck is equipped with a GPS tracking unit that pinpoints the location of vehicles in real time. The information gathered by the FM Communicators creates historical reports, in addition to real-time tracking and locating, to show completed routes including starting and destination points, as well as stop points along the way.

With MiX Telematics' technology in place to give Hess detailed feedback about its driver safety habits, the company is better positioned to improve their driving habits. In fact, the success that Hess has experienced over nearly the last two years during our pilot program has led them to purchase additional units for their trucks operating across North Dakota and areas along the Gulf Coast.

While driving-related events continue to be among the most prominent causes of fatalities in the oil and gas industry, Hess is also concerned about its driver safety on-site. Panic button technology, which was included in the MiX Telematics driver safety solution, helps ensure drivers have access to communication in the event of an on-site incident.
