Heidenheim, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, 2010/09/24 - Light trucks and coaches can now brake wear-free. Voith Turbo will be presenting the new Magnetarder at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show. FSE: VO2A
The new retarder stands out by its exceptional low weight and can be retrofitted without any modifications to the driveline. It is available as an ex works option in virtually all Mercedes-Benz Atego trucks with G60 and G85 gearboxes. IVECO has issued a retrofit approval for the Eurocargo. In the midibus market, the Voith Magnetarder is already used as series-installed equipment at Anadolu Isuzu, Turkey, and at SOR in the Czech Republic.
The Voith Magnetarder operates with the world's most powerful permanent magnets. Weighing only 39 kilograms, it is the lightest secondary retarder, braking coaches and trucks in the 7.5 - 16 ton range comfortably and safely. It also convinces by excellent braking powers with a braking torque of up to 650 Nm. The Magnetarder backs up the service brake so efficiently, that up to 90 percent of all braking operates can be performed by this secondary unit. This is added by a gain in comfort owing to reduced gear-shifting movements and tendentially higher average speeds.
The Magnetarder runs directly on the propshaft, so that the shaft does not have to be shortened when the retarder is installed. The patented principle is universally applicable, easy to install and highly cost-effective. This makes the Magnetarder attractive both as original equipment and also for retrofits.
During test drives in the Swiss Alps, on the Brenner and the San Bernardino Pass with extremely steep and long descents, the Magnetarder proved itself in a 7.5-ton truck with a trailer. It also stood out in practical driving tests with Atego customer vehicles.
In a test vehicle, the front brake linings still had the same thickness as an original set even after 10 000 kilometers. Further measurements showed that the application of the service brake could be reduced by more than 60 percent.
