To discuss more on the potential growth opportunities in the Philippines Telecoms industry, Frost & Sullivan opened its 2nd summit focused on the telecommunications sector this morning at the Peninsula Manila Hotel. The Philippines Telecoms International Summit 2010, endorsed by the Commission on Information and Communication Technology (CICT) greeted over 100 delegates primarily from the local market.

While the Philippines remains a huge prepaid mobile market and is expected to remain so until 2015, the rise of mobile internet and broadband is likely to influence an increase in postpaid numbers in the same period, says Frost & Sullivan.

Opening the summit with his presentation was Nitin Bhat, partner at Frost & Sullivan. Speaking about the prospect that the nation’s telecommunication sector holds, Nitin mentioned that data on the whole is projected to increase to 55% of the total average revenue per user (ARPU). He cites this increase as a result of increasing voice usage, SMS bundling and mobile internet adoption. He, however, stressed that mobile operators need to ensure that their back-haul networks are upgraded to cater to this increase in data traffic. Failing to do so, he cautioned, it would aggravate a dump pipe risk.

Following his opening, the summit progressed to hear from the Honorable Ivan John E. Uy, Chairman, Commission on Information and Communications Technology. He elaborated on the government’s plans, policies and priorities for developing 3G network nationwide.

The insightful presentation by the Chairman of CICT was followed by a keynote address by Gamaliel A. Cardoba, Commissioner of the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC), Republic of the Philippines. The Commissioner highlighted the status quo of key policies and regulatory initiatives by the Filipino government in preparing for a nationwide adoption of broadband services.

Another highlight at the full-day session was the international analyst insight presented by Marc Einstein, Industry Manager for ICT Practice at Frost & Sullivan. In his presentation Marc, shared the outlook of the Philippines Telecom Industry and the business and service opportunities that were awaiting those who were quick and witty enough to invest in this nation.

In his presentation he mentioned that at present, mobile data already comprises of over 50% of ARPU in the Philippines with non-messaging contribution currently at an estimated level of 7%. The country also has the highest data usage figures in this area with 54% of the total data usage in the region coming from the Philippines.

Marc further emphasized, "Future revenue growth is expected to be driven by wireless broadband adoption and the possible entry of more wireless competitors. Moreover, the regulatory reforms underway promise rising competition, leading to further growth opportunities in the Philippines telecom market."

Endorsed by CICT, the summit addressed topics ranging from optimizing operations support and billing support systems (OSS/BSS) platforms, maximizing return on investment (ROI) for complete OSS/BSS transformation, monetizing the next generation network along with many insights from local operators on internal challenges and regional counterparts on untapped opportunities in the country.

The day-long summit brought together senior executives from the country and the region to discuss strategic and tactical issues faced by the industry. Speakers included representatives from Amdocs, Bakrie Telecom, Bayan Telecommunications, Dialog Telekom, Planet Online Laos, Subex, Qualcomm and others, along with senior analysts from Frost & Sullivan.

The summit was endorsed by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology. Clarity and Qualcomm were the gold sponsors, Amdocs, Intec, PeopleXS and Subex were the partner sponsors while Dialogic was the exhibitor sponsor for the summit.

Wall Street Journal Asia was the official newspaper for the summit, ZDNetAsia was the official online media partner and PR Newswire was the official newswire.

TelecomAsia and Wireless Asia were the official media partners, The Telecom Channel was the official TV partner, Management Systems Asia was the media partner and Developing Telecoms was the supporting media for the summit.
