India’s hydropower generation potential is 300,000 MW out of which only 145,000 MW can be exploited. According to our research report “Indian Power Sector Analysis”, hydro power capacity is projected to get doubled by 2017 mainly due to start up of new power projects. The Indian government has also made huge investment to set up new hydro projects in North Eastern region that will produce around 14,000 MW of electricity. Demand for power in India is driven by rapid industrialization and urbanization, attracting private and public sector companies to setup new power plants.

We have found that only about 910 MW of hydro power has been commissioned with the help of private players which constitutes less than 3% of the total installed hydro power capacity. Our team of experts have also found that Himachal Pradesh has the largest capacity in terms of small hydro power potential followed by Uttaranchal, J&K, Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The study has also found that India currently has huge power requirement and the supply may not be adequate in the coming years.

According to our research, there is huge deficit in power during peak hours as well as in normal hours. This deficit provides the platform for further investment in the Indian power sector. Moreover, Northern region is projected to have the highest requirement of energy in 2010-11. Within the peak hours, Northern region remains the most suffered region from the lack of power availability followed by Southern region and North Eastern region. Furthermore, the interest of private sector in power generation is due to the possibility of selling power at high prices in the present supply constrained scenario.

“Indian Power Sector Analysis” analyzes the prevailing trends and provides valuable information regarding the future potential of power sector. The report provides detailed study of transmission, distribution and consumption of power including analysis of nuclear, wind and solar power scenario in India. The report covers each and every aspect in order to help clients making prudent investment decision.
