A new digital video training resource, which gives practical advice on how to deliver effective slide presentations, has been launched today by Video Arts, the UK’s leading provider of video-based learning.

Called Presentation is Everything, the resource includes 17 minutes of video content, in which Matthew Horne (Gavin & Stacey, The Catherine Tate Show) plays a manager who receives tips on how to improve his presentations, from colleague Sally Phillips (Smack the Pony, Bridget Jones’s Diary). In a series of entertaining and memorable flashbacks from his failed presentations, she offers advice on preparation, structure and style.

Designed to help novice and experienced presenters to enhance their skills, the resource can also be used by line managers who want to up-skill their teams and by trainers who want high-quality video examples to add greater impact to their own presentation skills training sessions. It shows how to structure your presentation; how to avoid ‘Death by PowerPoint’ by using slides and visual aids to support your points and add impact; how to present complex or technical information and how to capture and hold the audience’s attention and interest.

“The ability to present well is an important skill that helps you to get your message across, whether you’re pitching, interviewing or managing a project,” said Martin Addison, Managing Director of Video Arts. “This is a brand new resource featuring humorous, engaging and memorable video content. It can help anyone learn how to deliver more effective presentations with greater impact.”

The flexibility of digital video means the video content can be used in a number of ways. Trainers or line managers can show the video footage in full to a group of delegates or they can use short, bite-sized clips of any section to reinforce a key point. The video clips can be easily embedded into Word or PowerPoint documents or emails. Organisational licences are also available which allow employees to watch the video content online, for self-study. The resource is also available as a DVD.

“Some people still love DVDs but the limitation is that a DVD can only be in one place at one time,” said Martin Addison. “It’s a less flexible option than steaming the content, which allows anyone in any location to watch the video on their computer - and get instant access to the learning content - at their own convenience.”

Presentation is Everything comes with a course leader’s guide, delegate worksheets, customisable PowerPoint slides and a self-study workbook.

The tips highlighted in the resource include: don’t read from a script or a list of bullet points; speak slowly and clearly; pause for emphasis; avoid abstract phrases or jargon; use positive body language; always maintain eye contact with your audience; use your hands to emphasise and reinforce your points; use simple and relevant images; interact with your audience and avoid risqué jokes or comments that might offend anyone; rehearse, rehearse and rehearse to ensure your presentation runs smoothly; always check practical aspects such as your equipment and the availability of seating for your audience.

With an annual licence, all employees in an organisation can have a year’s instant, online access to the resource. Video Arts licences can cover anything from one programme to the company’s complete digital library of over 270 training titles. Alternatively, the resource can be rented digitally or on DVD from £195.
