This content greatly enhances navigation system functionality by enabling navigation systems using NAVTEQ Voice data to provide audible guidance for over 40,000 specific street names, signs and administrative areas using Argentinean pronunciations.

For example, many navigation systems provide generic, audible directions such as “turn right” or “stay to the left.” With the integration of voice phonemes into the NAVTEQ map, navigation systems can offer the correct pronunciation of specific spoken directions such as turn left onto Avenida Corrientes, then right onto Libertad. Additionally, because the NAVTEQ map database does not contain abbreviations, it avoids the confusion of AVENIDA (a-ve-ni-da) being pronounced as AVE (a-vi) that can found in less sophisticated transcription software. Another, end-user benefit is easier destination selection. Navigation systems enabled with NAVTEQ Voice can offer end-users the option of speaking the address of their destination into the system providing a hands-free interface.

NAVTEQ field teams work with a variety of resources from local tourism boards to government offices, to confirm correct local pronunciations and interpretations of abbreviations. They then employ a unique method of transcribing the voice data that includes manually checking all transcriptions. The end result is highly accurate data that can interpret, correct and alternate pronunciations and other variants.

This attention to detail supports the integration of geoqualifier functionality. Geoqualifiers improve end-users’ experiences by changing the pronunciation of words based on the geographic location of the device. For instance, in Argentina words with “LL” are either pronounced “sh”, “y” or “i” depending upon the region. Due to the robustness of the NAVTEQ Voice phoneme dictionary, the navigation system can provide the preferred regional pronunciation once the device has identified the location of the end-user.
