A significant number of end users have latched onto the green building wave and are increasingly favouring equipment that will consume less energy.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (buildingtechnologies.frost.com), The South African HVAC Markets: A Voice of Customer Analysis, finds that the commercial and industrial HVAC markets will continue growing despite the current liquidity pressures faced by most end users. The following technologies are covered in the research: temperature sensors, pressure sensors, flow and velocity sensors, gas, humidity and occupancy sensors.

"End users consider HVAC to be one of the largest sources of power consumption and this has, to some extent, limited the market," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Kudzanayi Bangure. "However, this is now changing due to improvements in the technology and methodologies used by suppliers."

Recently in the mining industry there have been two significant developments with regard to the optimisation of HVAC equipment. These include the modification of underground refrigeration systems to alter energy consumption demand and changes to the diameter of the ducting systems used to ventilate the shafts. Both changes have resulted in reduced power consumption.

The South African commercial and industrial HVAC markets are characterised by low product differentiation and intense competition among the existing companies.

The degree of competition is high due to the fragmented nature of the market. There are several companies operating in the market and there are multiple brands that each company stocks.

"End users recommend that suppliers offer systems at competitive prices to increase market share," says Bangure. "HVAC companies should also try to offer total building technology solutions in order to sustain their competitive positions in the market."

The growing demand for integrated systems by most end users is beginning to result in HVAC systems being sold as part of integrated systems.

"End users are increasingly looking for a combination of systems," remarks Bangure. "These could be a combination of security, lighting and HVAC systems or the inclusion of filtration, extraction, humidification and general air quality control into one HVAC system."

The South African HVAC Market: A Voice of Customer Analysis is part of the Building Management Technologies Growth Partnership Services programme, which also includes research in the following markets: The South African HVAC Market: An Analysis of The Top Five Verticals, The South African Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) Market and, The South African Commercial & Industrial Security Systems & Services Markets.
