Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom, 2010/04/15 - Oxford University Press are to make the The BBC College of Journalism website available to an international audience using technology from Semantico, a leading provider of services and technology for online publishing.
This unique project, powered by the Semantico Access Management System (SAMS) Gatekeeper technology, will enable Oxford University Press to sell subscriptions to the BBC College of Journalism site to a worldwide audience.
SAMS Gatekeeper will be embedded within the existing website to provide integration with the Semantico Access Management System that manages all access management needs for Oxford University Press. The Gatekeeper technology acts as a proxy between end users and the product site, bringing existing products under the control of SAMS so they can begin earning revenue.
'Journalism schools worldwide have expressed strong interest in accessing the BBC's content,' noted Tim Fenton, who has overseen publication of the site for the BBC. 'With their global presence and reach we could not be happier to have Oxford University Press on board to help us reach out and make this content available to journalists around the globe.'
Richard Padley, Managing Director, Semantico said: 'We're delighted that the SAMS Gatekeeper technology has provided the solution for this project which will allow these important web resources to be brought to a wider audience. Online Publishing is always developing. Innovative partnerships such as this one demonstrate that with an imaginative approach existing websites can be crafted into profitable new projects.'
About the BBC College of Journalism
The BBC College of Journalism (COJ) was established in 2006 with the mission of overseeing all training for BBC journalists throughout the world. To accomplish their goal, the BBC launched a companion website on its intranet in 2007 and used it as a way to distribute to BBC journalists the training materials designed and developed by the COJ. Recognizing the inherent wealth of information conveyed by the material and the value that journalism students and journalists worldwide would gain from access to the site, the BBC has made BBC College of Journalism available throughout the world
The BBC College of Journalism site is freely available to UK residents but commercialised outside the UK. This is in line with BBC policy for other online services. UK residents fund the BBC via a licence fee. Commercialisation outside the UK helps the BBC invest in content while keeping the licence fee as low as possible. The BBC chose the OUP to manage the international distribution of the College of Journalism site following an open tendering process.
