The German Ministry of Transport, Construction and Urban Development (BMVBS) has nominated the pilot projects of the research program “Elektromobilität” (Model Regions Electric Mobility). In a total of eight model regions, a number of trial vehicles are being tested for their practical road capabilities - among them Solaris Urbino 18 articulated buses with DIWAhybrid transmissions from Voith.
After the trial phase, which runs until October 2010 and ends with a certification of the vehicle, a Solaris Urbino 18 DIWAhybrid will be tested in everyday operation at Bochum-Gelsenkirchener-Straßenbahnen AG (BOGESTRA) from November 2010 until June 2011. It is intended to add another 50 Solaris Urbino 18 DIWAhybrid-buses to the fleet.
"The DIWAhybrid is currently the only German-made parallel drive for citybuses. It is a further development of the proven DIWA transmission for modern electric drive concepts," says Walter Rau, Manager Electric Drives, at Voith Turbo. The bus manufacturer Solaris Bus & Coach has decided in favor of the DIWAhybrid system, after it had been tested successfully in citybuses in USA.
In the DIWAhybrid, an asynchronous electric motor supports the diesel engine during starting and accelerating. During braking, the asynchronous machine operates as a generator and acts as a primary retarder, which optimally supplements the DIWA secondary retarder. This protects the service brake, reduces brake wear and decreases the ensuing fine dust emissions. Energy gained during braking (recuperation) is stored in a special 410 kg nickel-metal hydride battery on the roof of the bus. The entire hybrid system increases the weight of the bus by 600 kg. At the same time, an input power of 290 kW and an input speed of 1 600 Nm are available.
The Solaris Urbino 18 DIWAhybrid runs on a Cummins engine with 184 kW and a capacity of 6.7 liters. The electric generator of the parallel-arranged DIWAhybrid has an output of 150 kW. A Solaris Urbino 18 DIWAhybrid offers 51 seats. In total, 161 passengers can be moved with the bus.
