The first of its kind, Doxa's product is based on the unique Ceramir technology that is developed by nano-structurally integrating bioceramics.

Dental procedures have been in a rise due to the lack of proper care for the teeth. Simultaneously, the need for newer biomaterials with a better compatibility with the human body has become more obvious. Lack of biocompatibility directly links to increase in pain for the patient and the need to repeat the procedure, which increases the healthcare expenditure. This can be avoided with better biocompatibility of the biomaterial used for treating dental disorders.

Interestingly the need for tooth filling and denture fixing is due to secondary caries that are caries found in the restored tooth. In normal cements, there is a crevice formed between the material and dental tissue, where the risk of leak of nutrients and bacteria is high. This leads to decay of the tooth in the long run. The reasons for the gap formation may be many, depending on the type of material used, but can be attributed to physical change of the material when exposed to heat and other factors.

"The materials in the mouth are exposed to heat, rapid change in temperatures, mechanical loads and bacterial influx, hence the material used should be of very high resistance to prevent gradation with time, and reduce changes inflicted to the natural environment," says Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Sowmya Rajagopalan. "The need for addressing these drawbacks directly links to increased biocompatibility that is the key feature of Doxa's Ceramir™ Crown & Bridge, which has the special ability to thrive with saliva and heat."

A chemical curing reaction starts when water is mixed with the ceramic powder and nano-crystals precipitate. These crystals adhere to all surfaces and thus integrate better with the tooth. This hardening mechanism of the material is unique. It helps fill the contact zone between the tooth and the foreign material, thus increasing biocompatibility.

One of the key benefits of Ceramir™ Crown & Bridge, other than increased biocompatibility, is the ability to have quicker treatment procedure. The product is designed such that the material, cement powder and the liquid activating the cement, come in a capsule. Ceramir™ Crown & Bridge is the only bioceramic which hardens effectively at body temperature. Even the packaging is made of recyclable materials with small amount of packaging material to be environment friendly.

"Ceramir™ Crown & Bridge can coexist in a natural environment – it does not shrink and has thermal properties close to the enamel and dentine," says Rajagopalan. "The resulting treatment, reduced pain and increased success rates of the implantation reflects on the health statistics with reduced repeat dental procedures and decrease in healthcare expenditure."

Over the whole of last year, the awareness and acceptance of Ceramir™ Crown & Bridge has been steadily increasing. For revolutionizing the dental cements Industry, Doxa is the worthy recipient of the 2010 European Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product Innovation of the Year. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to a company that has demonstrated and innovative element in a product by leveraging leading edge technologies.
