PRZOOM - /newswire/ - Bury, Lancashire, United Kingdom, 01/21/2010 - Dr Mike Short, vice president for research and development at leading European mobile phone company Telephonica O2 UK, is to address a meeting of Digital Bury on February 25.

It is an honour for Digital Bury, the body which represents the substantial number of digital businesses in the town, to welcome him as a guest.

Dr Short is a substantial figure in the mobile phone business, with which he has been involved for 21 years. At O2 his role is to direct the next phase of mobile phone development including third generation and data applications technologies. He will outline to the Bury group, 21st Century trends in the digital economy, including the scale of information and communication technology (ICT) globally and the needs of a connected world.

Digital Bury is an initiative by Bury Council to recognise and promote the development of the digital industry cluster in the town. Spaces at the February event at The Met are limited to 100, with Digital Bury members having priority. “It is a major coup for Digital Bury to learn from someone at the forefront of mobile communications how he sees the industry developing and recognition of the strength of the industry in the town,” commented Tony Tickle, coordinator of Bury’s digital and new media development team.

Mike Short – Brief Profile
Mike Short’s career spans 34 years in electronics and telecommunication with the last 21 years in the mobile communications field. After looking after Cellnet’s 3G strategy he was appointed VP for technology for the O2 Group in 2000. He is the current chair of the UK government Trade and Investment Information and Communications Technology Sector Advisory Board. He is a fellow and vice president of the Institute of Engineering Technology and also a fellow of the Chartered Institute for Information Technology, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and the Royal Geographical Society.
