Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), the leading provider of mobile virtualisation software for mobile phones and broadband Internet devices, today announced that it has been selected as a finalist for the Red Herring 100 Global Awards, a prestigious list honouring the world’s most promising private technology ventures.
The Red Herring editorial team selected the most innovative companies from a pool of 1,200. The nominees were evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of global strategy, and integration into their respective industries.
“This year was especially difficult,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “Despite the global economic situation, there were many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products that we had a difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. Now we’re faced with the arduous task of selecting the final 100 winners of the award. We know that this year’s crop will grow into some amazing companies that are sure to go far.”
Over the past twelve months, deployment of OK Labs solution has doubled from 250 million mobile devices into more than 500 million devices. OKL4 now ships on cutting-edge smartphones such as the HTC G1 and G2, the HTC Hero, the Motorola Droid and Cliq, the Palm Pre, and the Toshiba TG01OK. Moreover, the OKL4 Microvisor now powers the world’s first and only commercially-available fully-virtualised smartphone, the Motorola Evoke QA4.
The company also forged partnerships with ST-Ericsson, the world’s second largest wireless chipset manufacturer, and with enterprise virtualisation company, Citrix Systems, enabling new opportunities for OK Labs in the burgeoning mobile virtualisation ecosystem.
“Despite the global recession, 2009 was a remarkable year for OK Labs,” said Steve Subar, President and CEO of OK Labs, “We also received second round funding, expanded product offerings, and gained industry recognition for our groundbreaking research.”
Red Herring’s annual list of top private global companies is an important part of the company’s tradition of identifying new and innovative technology companies and entrepreneurs. The honor is given every year to the most promising technology companies that are expected to lead the next wave of disruption and industry innovation. Technology industry executives, investors, and observers have regarded the Red Herring 100 lists as an invaluable instrument to discover and advocate promising companies. Past award winners include Google, Yahoo!, Skype, Netscape, Salesforce.com, and YouTube.
Last year, OK Labs was a finalist for the Red Herring 100 North America award.
