Frost & Sullivan, the Growth Partnership Company, has launched a subscription-based research program which will assess awareness, adoption, plans, and spending in the commercial building sector of the U.S. market on an ongoing basis.

The green building promise has been linked to U.S. economic growth and prosperity, in addition to a strategic initiative to drive energy efficiency. Coupled with increasing efforts by building owners to drive down costs, the market for green building technologies is expected to grow significantly over the next decade.

"Increasing energy costs, government infrastructure funds, and increasing regulations will continue to drive the growth in the market," explains Jorge Moreno, Program Manager in the Building Technologies practice at Frost & Sullivan. "Challenges to this growth include the fragmented supplier network, as suppliers compete for building owners' budgets."

All respondents to the study will be decision makers and influencers for commercial buildings in the U.S. Frost & Sullivan intends to survey two key influencers in the implementation decision process: (1) Specifiers: Architects, Engineering Consultants and Mechanical or Electrical Contractors (i.e., individuals who influence or make the decision for the specification and installation of green building technologies); and (2) End Users: Facility Managers (i.e., individuals who manage or operate commercial buildings).

The study will incorporate the following objectives:

• Measure familiarity, attitudes and the perceived advantages of various green building technologies;

• Analyze preferences, purchase criteria, implementation intentions and current penetration with respect to green building technology;

• Identify the key drivers and restraints for the implementation of green building technology and the perceived/experienced installation challenges;

• Explore the expectations for future green building technologies;

• Measure current and anticipated investments in green building technologies;

• Determine the relative competitiveness of key suppliers or brands as perceived by building owners and specifiers;

• Establish the training and educational needs of customers and specifiers.

The study will provide coverage of a wide range of technologies that impact a building's efficiency, both those installed directly into the building and those outside the building. Coverage of these technology groups will include prioritization of investment, and technology ROI ratings.

"A primary objective of this tracking study is the monitoring of the attitudes, opinions and behaviors of the commercial building market," explains Dan Colquhoun, Vice President, Customer Research, Frost & Sullivan. "Because the market is competitive, event driven, and somewhat fluid, suppliers need a tracking mechanism that provides reliable trending of market performance indicators. At the same time, this mechanism must be sensitive to high-impact events, such as a spike in energy prices."

A total of 150 respondents in the U.S. split equally between specifiers and end users will be interviewed for this study on a monthly basis, resulting in 1,800 completed surveys annually. The survey will sample executives from the commercial real estate, healthcare, and education facilities sectors.

"The continuous coverage allows for the monitoring of all significant market activity," adds Colquhoun. "In addition, the rigorous data collection methodology employed in continuous tracking provides the basis for unambiguous interpretation of graphical information without the interference that can result from unstable fluctuations in trend curves."

The Customer Research team at Frost & Sullivan conducts independent, non-sponsored research among end-users to evaluate and measure companies and trends in the market.
