Miami, FL, United States, 2009/07/22 - The law firm of Harper Meyer Perez Hagen O’Connor & Albert LLP (“Harper Meyer”) is proud to announce that Managing Partner George R. Harper has recently been sworn in as president of the Inter-American Bar Association (the “IABA”) - HarperMeyer.com.
Harper, who was sworn in on July 4th, 2009, at a ceremony held in conjunction with the IABA's 45th Annual Conference in Nassau, Bahamas, is the first U.S.-based lawyer elected president of the organization since 1997.
The election of Harper comes at a critical juncture, as Latin American demand for U.S. lawyers continues to increase in conjunction with commercial dealings between the regions. A U.S.-based president will result in greater impact on U.S. domestic and international policy as the IABA will be able to promote its agenda directly to U.S. politicians and groups with political influence.
The newly-elected president is looking forward to an active year. One of Harper’s principal goals as president of the IABA will be “to strengthen the ties between the U.S. and Latin American legal communities." Additionally, Harper has indicated that the IABA will seek to increase its focus on human rights issues that have a direct effect on Latin America.
Along with long-term organizational goals, Harper is preparing for the mid-year IABA Council Meeting, to be held at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida from October 28th to 31st, 2009. The conference, which is being held in cooperation with the American Bar Association’s International Section, is expected to attract more than 600 lawyers from around the world and will feature seminars and discussions on a range of current international law topics.
