The West Bengal Chapter of the Indian Institute of Architecture gets an opportunity to host the “IIA Excellence in Architecture Awards – 2008” ceremony at the architectural heritage - “Town Hall”, Kolkata on 29th May 2009. Honorable Mayor of Kolkata, Mr. Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya will grace the ceremony as the Chief Guest.
The annual IIA Awards of the grand old architectural institute of 1917 is being organized for the first time at the historical Town Hall constructed in the year 1814. The Town Hall, constructed by the Britishers as a venue to organize public meetings and social gatherings, has been restored to its old glory mainly due to the efforts of Honorable Mayor, Mr. Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. Mr. Bhattacharya a renowned artist, raised money for the revamp by auctioning his sketches of this marvel of architecture.
This event assumes significance with the Presidential address of the institute, which happens once in every 2 years. The three day convention will be attended by around 300 architects from all over West Bengal along with important architects from the executive committee members of Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Starting with the awards evening on the 29th May 2009, the convention will go on till the 31st May, 2009.

This includes buildings, centers, or complexes for governmental, public sector, or private organizations for administrative, commercial, religious, institutional, social, cultural, sports and educational and similar purposes.
3. Industrial - Structures, Complexes or Estates:
This covers structures and facilities for industrial, agriculture, transportation, communication and other services or infrastructure.
4. Interior - This includes interior design projects for private or public use.
5. Landscape Design - Open Spaces serving any kind of public or private use. It may or may not be in context of an architectural project.
6. Research - This may be given for outstanding research and/or unbuilt study projects.
