STARA Technologies Inc., an innovator in designing custom engineering solutions for both commercial and government customers, celebrated its 8th anniversary in style with an article featuring their “Mosquito” miniature guided parafoil in the nationally published Wired Magazine.

“Perfect timing”, STARA’s President Colin McCavitt stated, “the article being published was a great honor on its own, but having it coincide with the company’s anniversary only heightens the level of excitement around the office.” Seventy five percent of STARA’s employees have been with the company since inception, and the close family environment is comforting, especially in these economic times. “Together, we’ve all witnessed the company’s growth and success, and the future is extremely bright.”

As described in Wired, the “Mosquito” miniature guided parafoil, is the only delivery system light enough to be delivered from both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). It can accommodate any payload weighing between 1 and 150 pounds. Payload examples that have been considered revolve around Department of Defense (DOD) applications. Sensors that detect the presence of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), munitions to neutralize enemy military hardware or personnel or blood packets to resupply injured troops in remote, inaccessible locations.

STARA has been recognized as a leader in this technology field, as shown by the results from the Precision Airdrop Technology Conference and Demonstration (PATCAD) 2007 in Yuma, Arizona. During the event, STARA demonstrated their capabilities by delivering three five pound sensor payloads concealed in foam “fake rock” enclosures. The payloads landed 10, 7 and 3 meters from the target after being thrown out of a C-130 at 10,000 feet and over 2 miles away, resulting in a first, second and third place finish. STARA feels these results helped to secure new government contracts with the Natick Army Soldier Center to explore light weight payload delivery operations, the DOD /OSD / Joint Capability Technology Demonstrations Office (JCTD), as well as a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to deliver intelligent smart munitions and sensors for the Picatinny Arsenal.

“This month we celebrated our anniversary, and also paid tribute to our nations veterans of war”, stated Glen Bailey, STARA’s Chief Engineer. “The technologies we are developing today will play a vital role in securing the safety of our soldiers in future conflicts. Having the ability to fly safely out of small arms range yet delivery vital supplies like blood or bullets is going to make SOCOMs life better.”
