Chicago, IL, United States, 10/02/2008 – The company has developed an innovative approach, based on its unique Odyssey™ architecture, to address the needs of the broadband wireless access market.
"The key differentiator that separates Wavesat from other WiMAX players is the underlying chip architecture,” notes Frost & Sullivan ICT-Europe Programme Manager, Luke Thomas. “Rather than focusing on any one protocol standard, Wavesat’s OdysseyTM 4G broadband wireless chipset addresses a wide range of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based communication standards, including WiMAX, WiFi and 4G LTE."
The company has pioneered an innovative approach to programmability for the Odyssey architecture. An array of custom designed, ultra-small digital signal processing (DSP) cores are used to minimise size and power dissipation. This combined with advanced power management techniques such as algorithm level power management; voltage scaling and the benefits of embedded memory allow the Odyssey architecture to consume a fraction of the power of traditional hard wired designs.
“Wavesat’s Odyssey solution is a programmable solution which supports multiple broadband access standards,” remarks Thomas. “This multi-protocol approach significantly changes the rate of adoption of wireless broadband technology and benefits the entire ecosystem, by removing uncertainty for both OEM suppliers and carriers.”
The Odyssey architecture is extremely scalable and allows Wavesat to quickly introduce products throughout the price/performance curve. Conventional hard wired designs can, at best, scale up and down by a factor of 2. As a result, Wavesat’s customers garner more for their investment given the advantages of flexibility and scalability.
While the Odyssey architecture brings many leading-edge technologies to market, the architecture still maintains full compatibility with existing standards. This approach of ‘innovation within standards’ is one that allows for easy acceptance of the technology by the market. The OEM and/or original design manufacturer (ODM) is provided with a high level robust solution that helps shorten their time to market.
Demand has surged since the introduction of the Odyssey architecture and the first silicon, the Odyssey 8500™. The Odyssey 8500 has been adopted by large ODMs like Compal for WiMAX Wave 2 products as well as by OEMs like NEC Infrontia for the XG-PHS protocol in Japan.
“The concept of a true multi-mode architecture is very appealing to the market and Wavesat’s implementation is defining the benchmark in terms of flexibility and power,” states Thomas. “Wavesat’s multimode architecture is well en route to become a mainstream choice as an industry standard. “
