Potential growth opportunities through waste-to-energy projects and the clean development mechanism initiatives remain unexploited. At the same time, integrated waste management is emerging as a promising solution to the challenges facing the local waste industry.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (environmental.frost.com), South African Solid Waste Management Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $1,148.7 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach $1,784.5 million in 2014.

"Increased production in the country, together with rising and changing consumption patterns, has resulted in significant amounts of waste being generated," notes Frost & Sullivan Programme Manager David Winter. "This has exacerbated waste levels to the degree of potential crisis, making proper waste management imperative."

Littering alone costs Johannesburg $10 million a year, while illegal dumping costs another $11 million. In April 2007, more than 10 tonnes of hazardous waste including used syringes, needles, expired medicines, drips, blood and amputated limbs were dumped and burnt just a few hundred metres from the Anglo settlement near Boksburg. Integrated waste management has become an important concept in addressing these and other challenges.

The waste management service has relied heavily on existing landfills and little effort has been put into trying to recycle materials such as cans, plastics and bottles. This reliance on landfills has limited the incentive to devise alternative methods of dealing with waste.

"Out of an estimated 1,633 landfills in South Africa, only 933 are licensed," explains Winter. "This high number of unlicensed sites creates a need for more efficient waste management strategies that promote waste minimisation and materials recovery."

Waste recycling presents significant growth opportunities for waste management companies in this market. Large amounts of recyclable material are still found in mixed waste going to landfill. However, the rising source separation of waste material will result in increased recycling of higher quality paper, cardboard, plastic and metal cans.
