Screams As 59% Report Critical Systems Failing in the Last 6 Months

/PRZOOM - Newswire/ - Rising penalties, missing measurements and scream-based alert systems challenge IT management.

Watford, United Kingdom, 09/15/2008 – Research released today showed that 59% of organisations had suffered at least one critical business application failure or noticeable performance degradation in the last 6 months.

With 84% of organisations now having some ability to measure trends in network performance, yet only 59% having tools to measure performance of critical applications, it appears that vital information, which could prevent failures, is being missed. In fact 67% of IT mangers and directors report that fault resolution is slowed by a lack of detailed system information, and 29% say that they are still alerted to business critical IT problems by screams.

Fluke Networks who commissioned the report1, believes that against the background of tougher economic conditions and increased penalties for IT service failures, 56% of respondents faced increased penalties during the past two years, IT team priorities need to shift to deliver more from existing systems investments.

The company recommends that organisations collect and correlate information already available from their infrastructure to establish detailed, system wide, baseline measurements and trend analysis. This enables exceptions in network and application usage to be detected and alerts raised early, so that action can be taken before there is an impact on the business. This information also equips the IT team to more accurately plan capacity and optimise the use of current infrastructure, meaning that budget busting distress purchases can be avoided and investment plans justified on a basis of accurately established need.

“Whether it is screams, or email - like the majority of our panel - which alert you when a critical service fails to deliver, being told you have a problem once it is already impacting operations is not good for business.” says Philip Harragan VP EMEA of Fluke Networks. “If, once you have an issue, you lack the information to rapidly diagnose its root cause, you may be putting your organisation at unnecessary risk. There is a wealth of information available from the network infrastructure, servers and applications that businesses must correlate and then exploit, if they are to get the maximum value from their IT investments.”
