Ultipack® has a wide range of applications, making it suitable for protecting cosmetics, drugs, electronics, and other retail items. The complete packaging method developed by B+ Equipment is more consistent than using void-fill materials and offers enhanced protection.
Richard Russell, DC Manager for Bristan, Britain’s leader in shower products, says: “The automated carton solution is an integrate part of the stream-line despatch process. The ability to auto-pack and to manual-pack has added to the flexibility of the process. Ultipack® has provided a clean, professional, and consistent solution of carton [that is] delivered to the customer base.”
Packaging automation for order fulfilment does not entail high capital investment or involve the SAP-related technology that people commonly think of. Indeed, it should simply consist of a basic, cost-effective investment that solves – or simplifies – all packaging issues that companies may come up against.
For the past 10 years, B+ Equipment has been developing and improving its Ultipack® solution to its present level of sophistication, making it easier, cheaper and safer to pack, cushion, and seal orders. Sixty clients in the UK, Continental Europe, and the US already use Ultipack®, thus demonstrating on a daily basis its corporate benefits, as a packaging system that is both economical and suited to the needs of end-users.
Ultipack® comes with an automated packaging line developed by B+ Equipment, which comprises three machines that can pack 12 boxes per minute over three shifts, over seven days. The patented Ultipack® process consists in automatically inserting and gluing a distortable corrugated wedge inside the shipping box that locks the products in. The wedge is an alternative to void-fill materials used elsewhere, such as peanut shells, bubble wrap, or paper wrapping. Ultipack® locks perfectly the large and heavy items inside the box and, therefore, provides a better protection of the whole order than loose void-fill.
Reliable feedback from clients has confirmed that Ultipack® cuts the return ratio of products damaged during transport. Besides, Ultipack® provides the same protection capability whatever the production speed, box-filling ratio, product weight, or storage time after shipping.
The Ultipack® solution divides packing labour costs by four or five when selected as an alternative to the traditional FEFCO 0201 formula, which combines carton + void fill. Simultaneously, Ultipack® cuts material costs to such a degree – when compared to alternative automated solutions such as heat-shrink film of cold-seal packaging – that it generates a return on investment (ROI) which is under 18 months.
Additionally, the tray and glued lid used by B+ Equipment meets the 0201 taped-box resistance characteristics with lower corrugated grade – indeed, contrary to a typical 0201 box, the doubled tray faces are vertical, providing stronger resistance to vertical compression.
From the end-user side, Ultipack® is the modern packaging solution that everyone wishes to have access to, be it at work or at home. Thanks to the tear tape on the lid and to the perforations of the wedge, Ultipack® boxes do not require a Stanley knife for opening, which suppresses all risks, during handling, of getting hurt or damaging the goods.
Transport documents, invoices, or advertisement leaflets can be inserted above the wedge (and under the lid) to prevent loss and to avoid mixing with the products inside the box. Since the Ultipack® box is made exclusively of corrugated blanks, it is also easy to fold and discard – an environmentally friendly solution in line with today’s needs and expectations. Finally, the lid glued with hot melt is perfectly secure and tamper-proof, which goes a long way towards reducing losses due to pilfering, with the added advantage that disputes with distributors can be minimised.
An Ultipack® line consists of three machines: a tray erector, the Ultipack® wedging machine, and a lidding machine. This automated and high-speed set-up can take multi-depth boxes randomly, requires reduced floor space, needs little maintenance, and saves energy.
The very attractive ROI that is generated enables third-party logistics contractors (3PLs) and corrugated materials suppliers to lease Ultipack® machines to their clients. Clients are free to source the corrugated material from the supplier of their choice.
As a specialist in packaging for order fulfilment, B+ Equipment offers its clients free expertise to consolidate multiple box sizes, to develop implementation designs, and to calculate the ROI of the packaging function.
