Airborne Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems have traditionally been built as a custom package that includes the base aircraft, modifications to the airframe, communications gear, computers, and sensors. Little or no concern for interoperability or information sharing has ever been a priority.

However, with the advent of network centric operations, the military is increasingly adopting Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) hardware and software to promote interoperability and standardization. As airborne ISR platforms modernize, COTS producers should find growth in this previously closed market

Frost & Sullivan (defense.frost.com) finds that the North American Airborne ISR Market earned revenues of $6081.9 million in 2005 and estimates to reach $7174.6 million in 2011.

If you are interested in a virtual brochure, which provides manufacturers, end-users, and other industry participants an overview of the latest analysis of the North American Airborne ISR Market, then send an e-mail to Tolu Babalola - Corporate Communications at tolu.babalola[.]frost.com with the following information: full name, company name, title, telephone number, e-mail address, city, state, and country. The brochure will be e-mailed to you upon receipt of this information.

"Airborne ISR, especially unmanned aerial systems are undergoing radical changes and modernization, notes Research Analyst Darren Corbiere. "The integration of highly sensitive sensors, exceptional UAS performance and high-speed data links are combining to provide unprecedented surveillance and reconnaissance."

Obtaining and disseminating information has always been a task well suited for airborne ISR platforms. With advanced technology spiraling into highly effective Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and ISR systems, collateral damage and fratricide have both been reduced significantly in Afghanistan and Iraq. Recognizing the military’s success, the United States Border Patrol has also successfully begun using UAVs with ISR capabilities.

Dynamic network integration is pivotal to the success of ISR. Information management software and hardware must permit the integration of autonomous nodes as they come in range. Network management must also dynamically integrate into higher order management structures. Information assurance must provide end-to-end encryption, key management infrastructure, public key infrastructure, and integrated attack sensing, warning, and response. Answering these concerns is a significant challenge especially in the airborne ISR arena.

"The military is on the brink of a network revolution. Because airborne ISR platforms are key elements of network centric operations, there is a very high demand for security and interoperability," explains Corbiere. "Those who can bring a fully integrated network management solution to market will be able to establish themselves as serious contenders."

Many times the military is waiting for the industry to answer their questions, while contractors often wait for the military to propose the problem. As a result, both parties miss opportunities to overcome challenges that could prove mutually beneficial. For the competitive airborne ISR market, demonstrating that your computers, network management tools and security can handle the information flow is vital.
