In an effort to manage their fleet by curbing fuel costs and monitoring their vehicles, Benton’s Haulage turned to MiX Telematics, a leading global fleet telematics company, to install the FM Communicator solution including Trailer ID functionality, into 40 of their vehicles.
MiX Telematics (incorporating OMNiBRIDGE and Matrix Vehicle Tracking), a listed company (MIX: JSE) and a global provider of fleet management solutions, recently assisted Benton's Haulage to reduce fuel consumption and costs. In an effort to manage their fleet by curbing fuel costs and monitoring their vehicles, Benton’s Haulage turned to MiX Telematics, a leading global fleet telematics company, to install the FM Communicator solution including Trailer ID functionality, into 40 of their vehicles. Established in 1929, Benton’s Haulage is a family owned business that delivers general haulage nationwide. The company operates vehicles ranging from transits to 44 tonne artics, including crane mounted vehicles and trailer mounted fork trucks.
The MiX Telematics FM Communicator provided Benton’s Haulage with technology to record exact fuel usage and monitor all driver performance including distance traveled, driving speeds, excessive idling and other driving violations. Although Benton’s Haulage has their own dedicated workshops for repairing their vehicles, maintaining a large fleet of vehicles is time consuming and costly. The solution provided by Mix Telematics allowed the company to actively monitor their vehicles at any given time and helped ensure that their maintenance costs were decreased.
“The FM Communicator also allowed us to be proactive in communicating vital information to our customer’s in real time,” says Phillip Benton, Benton’s Haulage Managing Director. “Coupled with MiX Telematics’ Trailer ID solution, we feel that the benefits we have gained are exactly what we were looking for in a product.”
The FM Communicator is the ideal on-board computer for the management of vehicle and driver performance, driver safety and vehicle utilization. The on-board computer allows the fleet manager to remotely monitor the performance of a vehicle. Data is recorded on a second-by-second basis with driver violations and detailed trip information being made available to the fleet manager in real-time. Real-time SMS and e-mail alerts are triggered by user specified violations, such as over-speeding, harsh-acceleration and green-band driving.
The MiX Telematics Fleet Manager (FM) Trailer ID accessory is designed to help monitor the assets and cargo. The FM Trailer ID which can be fitted to any trailer and monitors when and where trailers were connected and disconnected whilst also measuring the distance traveled by the trailer.
According to Benton, Benton’s Haulage fuel savings were substantial - in excess of £20 000 in the first year. He also says cell phone calls were reduced, resulting in a savings of 25% of the total GSM communications bill.
Additional benefits were also achieved:“We were able to prove incorrect congestion charges equating to £500 per month and verify Penalty Charge Notice’s which saved the company about £250 in the first few months for parking offences that we received where the vehicle registration number was actually incorrect,” he says.
Benton also notes that the ability to instantly locate the position of a vehicle now enables Benton’s Haulage to send the most cost effective vehicle to a location, and the web access allows them to view vehicles online from anywhere in the world – ultimately improving customer service.
“As a haulage company, the Trailer ID was an essential product accessory for our fleet - it helps locate individual trailers whilst continuously being connected to the vehicles. It also provided us the technology to track the mileage of trailers for maintenance and inspection purposes,” says Benton. “Customer service is of utmost importance and the ID trailer solution helps us maintain our services by monitoring the waiting delivery and collection times and it shows us not only the times the vehicle was standing, but also the driving habits to ensure better driver safety and maintenance costs,” he says.
“There were several key factors that were considered when we were choosing a supplier for our tracking needs but with the increase in fuel costs it was highlighted as being a major contributor to our expenses. MiX Telematics not only provided us the most up-to-date technologies for better fleet management but a solution to curb rising fuel bills,” says Benton.
“Planning our routes with a product dedicated to fleet management was imperative in order take the most efficient route would help us to reduce our carbon foot print.”
Managing Director of MiX Telematics, Charles Tasker says: “We are in the business of providing solutions for Fleet Managers and their companies. It is always rewarding to know that in doing so we have also managed to curb costs to companies as well as reducing their carbon emissions, with the net result being a positive impact on global warming.”
