Dubai, UAE, United Arab Emirates, 05/15/2008 – SriLankan Airlines Chairman Dr. P B Jayasundara announced the appointment of Manoj Gunawardena as the Chief Executive Officer of the airline.
Mr. Manoj Gunawardena has been in the airline for over 25 years and has over 17 years of direct sales and commercial experience with the Airline.
Mr. Gunawardena was appointed as Head of Worldwide Sales in May 2006 and is currently responsible for the Airline’s global sales activities. Prior to being appointed Head of Worldwide Sales, he was Regional Manager UK, Europe and Americas, a position that he held from 2005.
Effective route management is playing a vital role in SriLankan Airlines’ growth in the region. The airline recently launched twice weekly flights to Jeddah, increasing its presence in the Middle East to nine destinations, SriLankan Airlines operates a full Airbus fleet to 41 destinations in 22 countries worldwide. Flights from the Middle East to Colombo connect with onward services to the Maldives, 11 key destinations in India, seven destinations in the Far East including Malaysia, Singapore, China and Thailand.

SriLankan Airlines (srilankan.aero) is expanding its Middle East operations, most recently adding two weekly services to Jeddah to its network starting March 27. The airline also increased its frequencies into Qatar and Bahrain recently, taking the airlines total frequencies into the Middle East to 45 flights a week. The airline has also recently opened up new routes into Asia adding a third weekly service to Goa and launching double daily services to Mumbai earlier this year. The growing number of services to India takes SriLankan Airlines closer to the 100 flights a week mark, and reinforces its position as the foreign carrier with the most number of frequencies into ten key cities across India.
