Companies need to watch cash flow, and many use trade through a barter exchange to do it.
"Trying to trade one-on-one with another company has many pitfalls. What if one company wants to trade carpet worth $3,000 for advertising that is only worth $2,000? Or worse, what if the other company doesn't want the carpet? Who will account for it all, and what about the IRS? A barter exchange takes care of all these problems and makes trading goods and services easy – and profitable," explained barter expert David M. Bresnahan, from Freedom Barter Exchange.
Local barter groups offer only the ability to trade with a pool of members in a local area. The technology of computers and the Internet now makes it possible to trade with anyone anywhere in the world.
"There are many goods and services that will always be traded locally, such as dental work, auto repair, and contractors. But now it is possible to use a barter exchange to trade for any type of product or service anywhere in the world," said Bresnahan.
Businesses with surplus inventory, unsold hotel and resort space, and time not being used are finding new profits by using barter.
"When you join a barter service you start by selling your products or services to others by listing what you have through a web site. Other members can shop and then make a purchase from you, but instead of paying with cash they pay you with barter credits. You can then use those credits to buy products or services you need from other members of the exchange, or just hold on to those credits for later use," explained Bresnahan.
Transactions that begin with barter often lead to a new cash-paying customer later. Many customers use barter to sample the services of a company before committing to cash payments.
Those who are new to barter will find that it helps to have a personal barter counselor guide them through the process of listing products and services for sale, and finding things to buy. Usually after the first few transactions most people find that it is not only easy, but also fun.
Barter exchanges in 13 countries and the United States have joined together in the International Barter Alliance. Members in each exchange in the alliance have access to the items for sale in all the other barter exchanges.
"Currently there are tens of thousands of members with listings for over $80 million of items for sale to any member of the alliance," said Bresnahan.
FreedomBarterExchange.com allows new members a month free so they can give barter a try. It is simple to start a free account list items for sale. Tens of thousands of potential customers receive a daily e-mail listing newly added items.
"Everything you normally pay cash for you can obtain with trade credits. Your office furniture, computers, printers, computer repair, software, phone system, office supplies, carpet, art for your walls, and professional services like accountants, lawyers and cleaning services can all be obtained through trade," said Bresnahan. "But leave your cash in your pocket because this is the real cashless society," he added.
