Based on its recent analysis of integrated wireless technologies, Frost & Sullivan presents Proxim Wireless with the 2008 North American Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award in recognition of its development of an integrated solution which converges WiMAX, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Mesh into one solution – MeshMAX.
Through this innovative concept, Proxim has brought to the fore the best that these three technologies have to offer in a single unit.
The MeshMAX is a tri radio product offering Wi-Fi connectivity for access, Wi-Fi mesh gateway for network redundancy, and a high capacity and carrier-class WiMAX radio for backhaul. This could also be termed the convergence of IP (Wi-Fi) and RF (WiMAX) technologies.
Although WiMAX and Wi-Fi are distinct technologies with unique characteristic features, they are often deployed in tandem – WiMAX for backhaul purposes and Wi-Fi mesh to provide access to Wi-Fi enabled devices such as multimode Wi-Fi phones.
Wireless mesh networks have nodes or access points that are capable of routing data traffic in an optimal manner by avoiding nodes that are congested and typically, only a few nodes can make a connection to the Internet. Thus mesh networks require careful planning and strategizing to minimize the number of hops from the client device to the Internet.
Some products from Wi-Fi mesh vendors make use of the 2.4GHz radios for client connections and 5GHz for node-to-node communications. Some deployments physically connect these nodes to a separate broadband wireless radio for the backhaul connection.
"Proxim's MeshMAX operates the same way with one 802.11b/g radio in the 2.4GHz band and one 802.11a radio in the 5GHz band for Wi-Fi connectivity," says Frost & Sullivan ICT Industry Manager, Vedavalli Rangan. "These radios are based on ORiNOCO mesh products which are Wi-Fi certified."
Additionally, MeshMAX includes a built-in 802.16d, fixed, WiMAX subscriber-unit radio that leverages the award winning Tsunami MP.16, which is WiMAX Forum Certified. The radio, based on an Intel chipset and working in the 3.3GHz to 3.6GHz-licensed bands, can backhaul directly to a WiMAX base station. Thus, client, mesh and backhaul connectivity are all integrated into one single unified unit. Proxim also offers the MeshMAX product for deployment in the 5GHz unlicensed band.
Simply put, the MeshMAX can enable many or even all of the nodes in a mesh network to have a backhaul connection to a base station and the Internet. This can greatly enhance the capacity of these networks and improve quality of service.
With its ability to support all mobile WiMAX and Wi-Fi clients, the MeshMAX can be particularly useful to service providers in expanding WIMAX network coverage through the expansion of their network utilizing Wi-Fi mesh. Enterprise WiMAX subscribers can also extend Internet access to local clients through Wi-Fi hotspot.
The MeshMAX caters to numerous applications such as wireless solutions for bandwidth-intensive and high definition IP-surveillance cameras located at important junctions, mobile hot spots, on demand entertainment and broadband access solutions, secure backhaul of Wi-Fi mesh traffic. Network operators can also leverage MeshMAX's features to deliver bundle of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access through broadband wireless connection.
"The confluence of these three technologies is logical as it brings to the fore the best that all the three technologies have to offer and Proxim's history of providing point to multi-point wireless networking products and solutions has given it a rich repository of experience and expertise to deliver MeshMAX," notes Rangan. "The company already has a strong intellectual property portfolio with over 120 US patents and over 235000 customers worldwide."
For its ongoing efforts in technology development and innovation, Frost & Sullivan is pleased to present Proxim Wireless with the 2008 of the Year Award for Technology Innovation.
Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovation(s) that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. The Award recognizes the quality and depth of a company's research and development program as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
