"With multi-specialty users being an eminent trend in the cardiovascular X-ray market, the importance of having equipment with a wide range of capabilities is critical," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Samantha Barbosa. "Being first-to-market with technological advances while offering benefits to both the pediatric and adult population is a trend that Toshiba has pioneered with the 5-axis Infinix CFi-BP system, which offers tremendous value in the hybrid multifunctional suites market."

The system was originally designed around the needs of Interventional Cardiac Symposium Lifetime Achievement award recipient Dr. John Cheatham. Dr. Cheatham needed to perform interventional work on an infant with a heart the size of a peanut, and the systems then available on the market could not accommodate this need. Thus, the 5-axis Infinix CFi-BP system was conceived.

Currently, Toshiba is the only manufacturer to offer a system that can be maneuvered in all angles, supporting the ability to do cardiac and peripheral work. The 5-axis Infinix CFi-BP system recently exhibited its advanced ability to perform complex procedures on the pediatric population at the July 2007 Pediatric Interventional Cardiac Symposium (PICS) in Las Vegas.

The system features a flat panel detector enabling the clear visualization of the smallest blood vessels and small devices for proper placement. The C-arm flexibility allows 180 degree access to the patient's head, and the position enables the capturing of angles denied to ceiling mount systems, without the need to maneuver the patient or the table.

"An advantage stemming from the use of this system is the decrease in dose of contrast media utilized in the pediatric population," notes Barbosa. "Other significant abilities include head-to-toe panning and an open design that allows complete access to the patient by the healthcare team, allowing quick intervention and improved workflow capabilities."

Besides this innovative addition to the cardiovascular X-ray product line, Toshiba also offers an array of premium products at reasonable prices benefiting a market that is currently under severe economic constraints. The dual plane system offered by Toshiba enables great efficiency and improved workflow in hospital-based imaging suites that are expected to pick up additional patient referrals for imaging. The adoption rate of this product holds promise in the healthcare community.

Toshiba's significant contribution to the medical imaging market with its innovative, first-to-market 5-axis Infinix CFi-BP system ensures the ability to meet the needs of the cardiac population while staying abreast of the surging hybrid market. In recognition of these achievements, Frost & Sullivan is pleased to present Toshiba America Medical Systems with the 2007 Technology Innovation Award.

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to the company that has demonstrated technological superiority within its industry. It recognizes the ability of the company to successfully develop and introduce new technology, formulate a well-designed product family, and make significant product performance contributions to the industry.
