Over the past six years Northrop Grumman has leveraged its extensive technological and contracting base to become one of the largest homeland security companies in the United States and has now begun looking overseas to increase its dominance in the marketplace.

“Northrop Grumman’s continued success will be significantly enhanced by its strategic approach to the market,” says Frost & Sullivan David Fishering. “As the trend of large product procurements has waned within the homeland security market, it has focused on providing mission-enabling services and systems integration.”

Leveraging its experience in systems integration and services as well as command, control, and communications (C3), Northrop Grumman continues garnering market share in an increasingly consolidated U.S. homeland security market. It was able to forecast the trend toward integrated interoperable systems and the services required to maintain the vast array of homeland security solutions – a move that propelled the company above the competition.

“Northrop Grumman’s integrated solutions model to homeland security combines people, policy, process, technology and training to support the mission of public safety agencies as well as the homeland security and homeland defense communities,” says Jerry Buckwalter, vice president of homeland security for Northrop Grumman.

In early 2007, Northrop Grumman received SAFETY Act certification for three of its premier technologies, a testament to its position in the market and the value that the Department of Homeland Security sees in the company’s technology and services. Along with these certifications, Northrop Grumman has been able to utilize its Enterprise Acquisition Gateway for Leading Edge Solutions (EAGLE) contract to maintain its position to compete for projects totaling upwards of $5 billion over the next few years.

“Even more impressive than the company’s federal government achievements has been Northrop Grumman’s uncanny ability to succeed in the state and local homeland security markets – a segment where the competition is still struggling,” adds Fishering. “As an established provider of 9-1-1 emergency command-and-control solutions, Northrop Grumman has been able to use its preferential status as an in-road to the fickle state and local markets and contracts at this level are expected to bring in over $400 million annually over the next three years.”

In the international markets, Northrop Grumman will be able to use foreign government spending to develop and implement the next generation of homeland security solutions, which it can then deploy domestically when the U.S. market searches for similar solutions.

In late 2007 the company expanded its presence in India, one of the fastest growing international security markets, opening offices in New Delhi. India is a growth market for all of Northrop Grumman’s business, but particularly for homeland security. The homeland security market in India is expected to total $9.7 billion by 2016, ensuring that Northrop Grumman’s position in India will continue to strengthen.

Northrop Grumman also provides its services to the police service in the United Kingdom to develop and maintain an advanced biometric identification system, called IDENT1. Over the next five years, the $244 million IDENT1 contract will replace the legacy system that Northrop Grumman provided in 1995.

In summary, a customer-focused approach to innovation has guided Northrop Grumman’s technologies and services to a best-in-class position in the marketplace. With a strong history of success and an abundance of opportunities in its future, Northrop Grumman will continue to be a leader in homeland security. As such, Frost & Sullivan is proud to name Northrop Grumman Corporation as the 2008 Homeland Security IT & Systems Integration Company of the Year.
