Austin, TX, United States, 07/11/2007 – August 30 Event Features Best Practices, Tools, Resources and Implementation Procedures to Identify Sustainable Manufacturing Practices and Resources
The University of Texas today announced the Manufacturing Profit: Productivity and Sustainability Conference will be held at the J. J. Pickle Research Campus on August 30, 2007. The event will feature opportunities to explore the engineering, financial, and process benefits of sustainable manufacturing.
“Sustainability issues are actively being explored by many industries. Companies are attempting to balance the environmental impact of manufacturing while still maintaining a reasonable profit margin. We have gathered academic and business leaders who can support the dialog and examine various aspects of solutions to these very real problems,” said Cath Polito, executive director of the College of Engineering’s Center for Lifelong Engineering Education at The University of Texas at Austin.
Today’s businesses are increasingly aware of the impact products and manufacturing processes have on the environment and are seeking a path for sustainable manufacturing practices and resources. This event will examine supply chain, distribution, and maintenance and management practices. Other topics include planning for the management of long-range influences on sustainability including regulatory, energy and raw material availability and substitution, and shifts in technology.
“We will focus on opportunities and the professional and ethical implications of the effects of globalization, corporate culture and relationships between conservation and the bottom line. We hope to expand the opportunity for each individual engineer to impact the entire cycle across multiple levels,” said Dr. Steven P. Nichols, Ph.D., P.E., Chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Center at The University of Texas at Austin.

Course fee is $200 before August 1, 2007, $250 after that date. Attendees will have the opportunity to satisfy Professional Engineer license renewal requirements by earning .55 continuing education units - including one hour of engineering ethics in a single day.
