Cisco Awarded for its Innovative Product Differentiation in the Service Provider Core Router Segment

(PRZOOM - Press & Newswire) —  Palo Alto, CA, United States, 2007-06-19 - Based on its recent analysis of the global service provider core router market segment, Frost & Sullivan has recognized Cisco Systems, Inc. with the 2007 "Product Differentiation Innovation Award" in the World Service Provider Core Router Segment

Cisco receives this Award for the innovative and differentiating features in its CRS-1 product series that has directly met some of the critical service provider requirements. In addition, it has provided a feasible path for future proofing service provider deployments.

The Cisco CRS-1 exhibits distinct innovations at both the hardware and software levels. It is available in standalone configurations of 320-gigabit per second (Gbps), 640-Gbps, and 1.28- terabits per second (Tbps) systems, with 40 Gbps-enabled and 100G-ready slot capacity in all form-factors.

Another innovative feature Cisco offers is support for multichassis configurations of 1.2 to 92 Tbps with the use of up to 72 line card shelves and eight fabric shelves operating together as a single unit is a differentiating innovation.

“Cisco IOS XR Software, a distributed and modular operating system, is at the heart of this scalability,” notes Frost & Sullivan Lead Analyst for Carrier Switch and Router Market, Prayerna Raina. “It is through this distributed OS that such a large multichassis system can scale in both the forwarding plane and control plane to perform as a single system.
This scale allows a provider to build an infrastructure with multi-decade longevity even with the dramatic growth in the use of video. With video as a driving application, multicast performance is also critical and the CRS-1 supports replication within the service-intelligent switch fabric, an approach that seems more efficient as it reduces the complexity of system-wide replication, if the replication is done within the line cards.

The CRS-1 also features secure router virtualization, which is the secure partitioning and isolation of hardware and software resources within a single router, irrespective of the configuration -- that is, whether it is a single-shelf or a multi-shelf system. This design should offer network operators more control over the distribution and partitioning of forwarding and control-plane resources for specific services and applications. Carriers can now isolate and manage distinct infrastructure and routing instances for specific services such as public switched telephone network (PSTN) voice, Layer 3 multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) virtual private networks (VPNs), and video-on-demand and Internet access.

Furthermore, the CRS-1 supports both fixed and modular line cards usable across all configurations. On the hardware level, the fixed cards feature the world’s first 40-Gbps (OC-768/STM-256) tunable WDMPOS interface, with Enhanced Forward Error Correction for up to 1000 KM reach and G.709 for OAM compatibility with SONET/SDH operational support systems.

“In addition, CRS-1 also supports Cisco’s innovative I-Flex design, which offers modular interfaces featuring shared port adapters (SPAs) and SPA interface processors (SIPs),” adds Raina. "The Cisco I-Flex technology incorporates service intelligence into the SPAs and SIPs, creating intelligent interface processors. This innovation addresses the Quality of Service (QoS), class of service (CoS), and security features on a single interface processor.”

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to a company that has best demonstrated the ability to develop and/or advance products with more innovative capabilities than competing vendors and products. The Award recognizes the company’s successful adoption of new or existing technology that has become a part of its well-designed product family.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
