Broadband households in Latin America will reach 30 million in the next five years, driven by falling prices for personal computers and increasing coverage of telecoms infrastructure in the region, according to a new study published today by the Centre for Telecoms Research, London.

The report expects broadband to penetrate households of lower-middle and lower classes as the number of homes with personal computers (PCs) increases 58% over the next five years, driven by greater affordability of computers.

”The next five years will represent a period of high-paced growth in the Latin American internet market. The consumer appeal of the internet in Latin America is improving and we expect a proliferation of localised online content over the next few years,” said Raj Modi, Research Director at Centre for Telecoms Research.

The report Latin America Internet Market Databook, 2002-2011 expects the Latin American broadband access market to be worth USD$14 billion by 2011, with Brazil constituting around a third of the market value. The report also predicts around 700,000 IPTV households by 2011 amid a migration of broadband connections to faster speeds (2 Mbit/s +).
