Las Vegas, NV, United States, 2005/10/03 - Thanks to KB Home's recent $24,000 donation, the Salvation Army's vocational training program will be better funded this fall. The vocational training program assists Las Vegas homeless people in getting back on their feet - KBHome.com.
The Salvation Army's vocational training program will help homeless men and women learn culinary arts skills, thanks to the valley's largest homebuilder. KB Home recently gave $24,000 to the charity's vocational program, which trains approximately 100 people every year.
“KB Home's support of this program helps make it one of the most successful programs in the Salvation Army,” said Major William Raihl, head of the organization's Southern Nevada division. “Graduates of this program have an approximate 96 percent employment rate and more than 85 percent of the students who get jobs remain with the employer for at least a year. That is an incredible success rate.”
In the ten-week program, students attend classes at the Community College of Southern Nevada and work 30 hours a week preparing the 1,000 meals served daily in the Salvation Army's massive kitchen. After successfully completing the program, most students are placed in jobs with Las Vegas hotels, casinos and restaurants.
“KB Home is a big supporter of the Salvation Army, but this program in particular makes significant contributions to the future of our homeless,” said Jim Widner, regional general manager of KB Home. “For those that want to learn job skills and become employed, this program can change their lives.”
The Las Vegas division of the Salvation Army was the first in the country to offer such an extensive vocational program. “It has become the model for other cities,” said Raihl. “The program has become so well known in Las Vegas that other Salvation Army locations are interested in duplicating it in their own markets.”
“The program is more than academic or cooking skills, it's about changing lives,” said Raihl. “We would not be able to do it without community partners like KB Home.”
