Gurgaon, Haryana, India, 2007/04/08 - Upgrading earthquake safety of highrise building by installing dampers. Taylor Devices, Inc. announced receipt of a $1.3 million order from Pakistan for the firm's seismic dampers for Avari Hotels International in the city of Islamabad.
A total of more than 200 Taylor Dampers, each rated at output forces up to 160 tons will be used to provide seismic protection for a hotel being constructed for Avari Hotels International in the city of Islamabad. The existing seven-story, four-section reinforced concrete structure that will be seismically upgraded and converted into a luxury hotel. The design requirements call for an earthquake protection level for the hotel that is approximately equivalent to that of northern California without extensive changes or reconstruction of the building frame.
Douglas P. Taylor, President of Taylor Devices, stated that, "This type of earthquake performance is easily achieved by simply adding Taylor Seismic Dampers to the existing building frame. In many projects seismic upgrade using Taylor Seismic Dampers has been acheived with the building facility still in use. Installation of Taylor Seismic Dampers requires minimal civil engineering works and minimum installation time when compared to other forms of seismic upgrade. It is also the most cost effective and efficient way of acheiving seismic upgrade. Taylor Devices dampers come with a performance warranty of 35 years.
The seismic retrofit concept with dampers is an outgrowth of research performed over the past ten years by the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) located at the State University of New York at Buffalo. MCEER's concentration was on seismic upgrade of existing hospitals in California, but the results of the research are directly applicable to any structure used predominantly by the public. Taylor Devices has been a strategic supporting partner of MCEER for many years, and this is but one more benefit from our collaboration."
The Avari Hotel chain was founded in 1945 by the late Dinshawji Byramji Avari and is one of the most respected names in the hotel industry in Pakistan. Avari Hotels International, still owned and managed by the Avari family, currently operates five hotels - three in Pakistan, one in Dubai, and one in Canada.
The heightened seismic risk in Pakistan and India and upgradation of the seismic codes by the Governments is making people to re-evaluate the protection levels existing and those desired. Many Thousands of buildings in India and Pakistan are defecient even to the minimum Earthquake Resistant - Life Safety standards. Most of such buildings are in Mumbai, Delhi and Islamabad.
