Plummeting prices of oil and gas (O&G) has compelled O&G companies to defer investments in water and wastewater treatment technology. The current focus is on cost-effective and sustainable water and wastewater management solutions; however, as the O&G industry rebounds in 2016, there will be increased investment in wastewater treatment and water recycling equipment. The total market, however, will not reach is pre-2014 revenues until 2019.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, North American Shale Oil & Gas Water and Wastewater Treatment Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $422.2 million in 2015 and estimates this to reach $633.1 million in 2021.

“Future practices and technology investments will be guided by the environmental and industry regulations in the United States and Canada,” said Frost & Sullivan Energy & Environment Senior Industry Analyst Seth Cutler. “As frack water has considerable polluting potential, the two countries have established several regulations and industry initiatives to remove contaminants from the liquid discharge.”

Water and wastewater companies employ a variety of solutions, but the most important ones are the established technologies of flocculation/clarification, media filtration and distillation. Demand is expected to be intense for wastewater reuse products, and technologies that offer better recovery rates will experience higher uptake.

While equipment suppliers are enjoying expanded opportunities, in contrast, they are forced to innovate so they can be affordable to O&G companies. In this scenario, modular solutions that can be located off-grid and are practical, multifunctional and compact are proving especially popular.

“As many of the sites for shale O&G production are located in remote and environmentally sensitive areas, end users are seeking more sustainable solutions,” noted Cutler. “Certain techniques such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling need especially high volumes of clean water. This stresses the local water resources as well as prompts the development of innovative treatments that can ensure that pollutants do not contaminate either the production process or the environment.”

Overall, technological developments and the thrust provided by Government and industry bodies bode well for the water and wastewater treatment market in the North American O&G industry.
