Senetas, the world’s leading developer and supplier of high speed network encryption hardware teamed with Geneva-based id Quantique SA, a recognised world leader in the commercialisation of Quantum Cryptography ("QC"), to produce the world’s first Gigabit speed hybrid quantum cryptography solution.
The award was conferred by global growth consulting company, Frost & Sullivan based on the company’s study of the global quantum cryptography market, in which Senetas was awarded the 2006 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Award. This award recognizes Senetas’ novel hybrid encryption technology.
"Senetas’ unique solution combines the strengths of classical encryption techniques and QC, thereby enhancing the performance of high-speed network encryption systems for high security applications", said Frost & Sullivan Australia Managing Director, Mark Dougan.
The citation accompanying the award states:
"In this hybrid encryption solution, a Senetas CypherNET encryptor (CNET) provides layer 2 network encryption and employs a physically connected QKD system, developed by the technology partner, as a source of encryption keys. The QKD system securely distributes encryption keys across the network, and the keys are then used by CNET to perform wire speed classical encryption across a network.
"This solution has been found to work across distances of up to 120 km, and the use of classical wires and encryption facilitates speeds of up to 10 Gbps, thereby overcoming QC’s limitations of speed. QKD enhances data security, with a potential to generate and exchange cryptographic keys over fiber optic networks with absolute security.
"This hybrid system could prove to be a strong differentiator in the network security market for Senetas. Immediate application and requirements for such a solution across various sectors, such as finance, banking, and government, is estimated to be high."
Mr Dougan said Frost & Sullivan analyst, Venkat Malleypula, recently conducted extensive global research and concluded: "The current classical encryption systems such as the CypherNet are reliable and can ensure the security of data for the next 30 years.
"In spite of possessing such a product in its portfolio, Senetas has come up with the hybrid encryption technology keeping in mind the requirements for data security with regards to unknown attacks and the development of quantum computers. This endeavour by Senetas to ensure data security for the present and future systems is commendable especially with the recent growing threat of cyber terrorism.
"There appears to be immediate application and requirements for such a technology for the provision of high security connections to Government and commercial organizations across the metro region.
"We believe this novel hybrid encryption technology could be a strong differentiator in the network security segment," the analyst’s report said.
Accepting the award, Senetas CEO, John DuBois said he was gratified that the decision to accelerate development of the hybrid quantum solution had resulted in global recognition of the efforts of both Senetas and id Quantique engineers.
"We appreciate the Frost & Sullivan research effort and the decision to give us this invaluable award that we expect will add further credibility to this new product development. But the ultimate recognition is the marketplace and I am pleased to report that initial European customer trials commencing last January have proved very successful and now another customer has asked for a proof of concept in a separate EU market," Mr DuBois said.
While details of customers undertaking trials of the hybrid solution in Europe could not be revealed, Mr DuBois said the initial feedback was excellent and both Senetas and id Quantique remained confident that a commercial deployment of hybrid quantum encryption would be achieved within the next six months.
