Taqua, a leading supplier of IP communications systems, applications and services to mobile and fixed operators, today announced that Sonus Networks, Inc., a global leader in secure and intelligent Cloud communications, and Taqua have partnered to bring a fully virtualized, standard mobile core network solution to market that provides mobile operators the quickest path to commercial rollout of Wi-Fi Calling services, also known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi). MobiFone Corporation, one of the largest mobile network operators in Vietnam, recently launched its Wi-Fi Calling service using the combined solution from Taqua and Sonus.
Under the terms of the partnership agreement, Taqua is integrating and reselling Sonus’s Session Border Control (SBC) portfolio with Taqua’s Virtual Mobile Core (VMC) to deliver advanced communications services to mobile network operator including VoWiFi and Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE). Sonus is a leading supplier of next generation Cloud-based Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and 4G/VoLTE solutions. Taqua is a leading supplier of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) services cores, and smartphone client solutions for VoWiFi. The combined solution from Taqua and Sonus represents the fastest and most cost effective way for an operator to launch Wi-Fi Calling services. At MobiFone, the solution was used to install, turn-up, trial, and begin commercialized Wi-Fi Calling services in just a few months.
This virtualized core network solution enables mobile operators to deploy a seamless Wi-Fi Calling experience that uses the phone’s native dialer, contacts, call history and voice mail. Subscribers do not notice the difference between calls made over WiFi or cellular. The solution supports smartphones with built in native VoWiFi capability, such as the iPhone, as well as smartphones that use Taqua’s downloadable Mobile Client software.
“Wi-Fi Calling cost-effectively solves the indoor coverage challenge that has plagued the mobile industry since day one," said Frederick Reynolds, vice president of marketing for Taqua. "Ultimately, it improves customer satisfaction and lowers churn. By combining Taqua’s virtualized IMS core with with Sonus’s virtualized SBC, mobile operators can get a Wi-Fi Calling service to market quicker than ever before. We look forward to building a strong relationship with Sonus and are already jointly engaged with several operators worldwide.”
The Taqua Virtual Mobile Core (VMC) is a virtualized IMS core network that enables rapid delivery of next generation voice and messaging services, including VoWiFi and VoLTE. Deployed and in service within Tier 1 mobile operator networks since 2010, the VMC is a carrier-grade solution that combines multiple IMS functions into a single, virtualized software product., including a Telephony Application Server (TAS), IP Short Message Gateway (IP-SM-GW), Service Consistency and Continuity Application Server (SCC-AS), and Media Resource Function (MRF).
“The integration of Sonus’ virtual SBC into Taqua’s virtualized mobile network core, provides mobile operators with a best-in-class solution designed to speed the rollout of VoWiFi,” said Mykola Konrad, vice president, Go-to-Market, Sonus. “By utilizing Sonus’ virtual SBC, Taqua customers gain the advantage of strong security to protect the mobile network edge and on-demand scalability for a seamless Wi-Fi Calling experience.”
