Specialty chemicals company LANXESS is showcasing its products, processes and systems for efficiently manufacturing leather for a wide range of purposes at the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai/China. From August 31 to September 2, 2015, LANXESS will use the opportunity to present its latest developments and major innovations such as X-Zyme (beamhouse), X-Tan (tanning) or X-Biomer (retanning) with a strong focus on its Sustainable Leather Management.
In particular LANXESS will address the hot topics of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) problems, Chromium (VI) issues and compliance with the upcoming MRSL (Manufacturing Restricted Substances List) of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals brand campaign (ZDHC).
“With our ‘Sustainable Leather Management’ program we want to support the manufacture of sustainable, eco-compatible products and technologies in the leather industry even more. Sustainability in the leather sector means more efficient production, processing and recycling. We are also committed to handling both the raw material and the waste produced even more responsibly and to reducing emissions from the end products, to name just some of our main objectives,” says Frank Paus, Vice President Sales & Marketing in LANXESS’ Leather business unit.
An innovation e.g. with an improved sustainability profile is the new, water-based LANXESS pigment range for high-quality leather finishing. The entire product range consists of solvent-free pigment dispersions featuring very fine particles and only a low polymer binder content. Furthermore, all products are casein-free and do not contain any emulsifiers, brightening agents or other additives capable of causing migration. According to current RSL, REACH and GDSL obligations, the new Aquaderm X-Pigments meet all important criteria which means they are free of VOC, heavy metals, chrome VI, formaldehyde and phthalate.
Guiding tools for VOC and Chromium (VI) issues
A VOC guide has been developed together with FILK, a renowned German Research Institute, which especially outside Europe should help a tanner to find the best solution to produce leather that meets the required VOC specifications. In addition in a cooperation with CADS, an important German brand association, a Cr (VI) guide has been published in five different languages (including Chinese), explaining the issues around Cr (VI) and proposing ten rules how to avoid a formation of Cr (VI) during leather manufacturing. During the exhibition LANXESS offers discussion forums with international experts and provides solutions to deal with the challenges which result from the increasing demand for sustainable produced leather.
For LANXESS, ACLE is much more than a fair in and for China. It has grown into the most important global leather fair and maintained this position since quite some time now. “In recent years the talks with our customers, dealers and other industry players have always given us very concrete information and valuable indications about the trends of the industry and this year will be no different,” says Paus. “The challenging market environment in China and elsewhere, raw material cost developments, ecological technologies as well as fashion and other article trends will surely be the main topics of discussions.”
Within the “Sustainable leather Management” program LANXESS offers innovative technologies along the entire production chain. “Our aim is to create measurable advantages in the form of reduced emissions, the elimination of health risks and a smaller carbon footprint (PCF product carbon footprint) to conserve energy and protect the climate. Our products and processes enable a sustainable leather production without detraction from quality,” Paus sums up.
LANXESS has one of the broadest ranges of leather chemicals available. These include inorganic and synthetic/organic tanning materials, preservatives and tanning auxiliaries, fatliquoring agents and dyestuffs, and finishing products such as polyurethane dispersions, acrylates and auxiliaries.
