Ethnic hair-care which is becoming increasingly segmented globally in general, is among other niche areas associated with health and beauty sector that will set to become one of the focal points for the thriving hair salons in the Middle East region.
According to Euromonitor International, the year 2006 saw the launch of several products specifically for ethnic men with different hair 'issues'. “While women have long been the focus for hair care products, manufacturers are now seeing the potential profit in providing for men who represent one specific consumer segment that has fallen under the spotlight of hair care players in 2006.”
“Such industry-related factors and other interesting developments will be highlighted at one of the leading platforms and the most successful beauty event in the region now in its 12th year – Beautyworld Middle East 2007,” said Ms Heather Nix, Group Exhibitions Manager of Messe Frankfurt, organisers of Beauty World Middle East - the region’s largest cosmetic and beauty trade show.
The event, scheduled to be held from May 20-22, 2007 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, will showcase the world’s latest beauty care and wellness products. Beautyworld Middle East will host 950 exhibitors representing 1300 brands from 55 countries and is expected to host approximately 9,500 trade visitors from around 80 countries.
Industry research also points out that in 2006 hair care players increasingly homed in on men who represent one specific consumer segment. Euromonitor predicts “Conditioners should be a target for hair care companies as they are proving to be a particularly fertile source for new product development, with sales forecast to grow by 14% by 2010.”
“There is an increasing inclination among the consumers to maintain their ‘health and looks’ as the desire to ‘stay-fit’ grows. This will give new growth areas associated with health, beauty and fitness sector and companies will be required to develop new and innovative products in order to meet the variety of requirements from consumers,” said Ms Nix.
Euromonitor says “this trend will become increasingly apparent in developing markets, as consumers become more affluent and can spend more money on self-improvement” and look-good items.
In 2005 the total global skin care products market was valued at AED 141 billion (US$38.3 billion), a figure that is second only to the hair care sector in size, according to Euromonitor which estimated the overall size of the global cosmetics market for 2006 at AED 95 billion (US$26 billion).
Last year, the cosmetics and personal care market in the UAE alone was worth more than AED 1.51 billion (US$414 million) in retail sales - an increase from US$382 million, according to a consumer survey. “Moreover, image and health enhancing products are becoming one of the top priority purchases of global consumers. The premium cosmetics and toiletries industry in particular is expected to benefit from this trend,” concluded Ms Nix.
Showcasing just what can be achieved through the combination of professional styling and quality hair care products at this year’s Beautyworld will be the ‘Walk of Beauty’;’ a themed contest using a number of the region’s hairdressers who are at the forefront of hair design.
Organised by MADI International - the leading hair and beauty equipment supplier to salons- this display will pitch stylists together in a literal head to head competition to fashion the best hair makeover under strict time conditions. Each competitor will be allowed 25 minutes to perfect a winning style and models will be used on a live stage, with the hairdressers working against the clock. There will no doubt be a tremendous atmosphere as it counts down and the stylists race to finish their creations and impress the judges.
