• GE to Provide 34 Megawatts (MW) of Renewable Energy with First Project in Country
• Wind Turbines will Assist Croatia with Meeting Renewable Energy Production Goals
The latest in a series of first wind turbine orders in countries such as Morocco and Pakistan, GE today announced it will supply Vienna-based renewable energy developer RP Global with twelve GE 2.85-103 wind turbines for the Rudine wind farm GE’s first wind farm in Croatia. The 34 MW project with be co-developed with Croatian wind pioneer Adria Wind Power, and will be located near the southern coastal city of Dubrovnik.
The Rudine farm could produce more than 85 gigawatt hours (GWh) of wind energy per year.
The wind farm GE’s first with RP Global and Adria Wind Power will contribute to the Croatian renewable energy production goal to provide 20 percent of the country’s final energy consumption by 2020, in concert with the European Union targets.
"After the success of our wind power plant Danilo near Sibenik, RP Global continues to align experience with the latest technology, keeping the highest environmental standards and working close together with the local community. We look forward to seeing the new GE turbines 'in action', generating electricity from Bora & Jugo/Siroco” said Bojan Reščec, RP Global’s Country Manager for Croatia.
After setting up the renewables incentive system in 2007 and joining the European Union in 2013, Croatia has added almost 300 MW of wind capacity, with more to be added. Additionally, and as part of its plan to achieve EU targets, Croatia has also set up a goal to maintain 35 percent of final electricity consumption coming from renewable energy sources through 2020.
“Croatia has focused targets for renewable energy and a plan to reach them, and GE is glad to help be a part of that,” said Cliff Harris, general manager for Europe for GE’s renewable energy business. “GE wind turbines operate well at the site conditions we see in Croatia, and our technology will enhance the economics of wind energy both for our customer and Croatian citizens.”
The wind farm contract will include a fifteen-year operations and maintenance agreement. The Rudine wind turbines will also benefit from GE’s Salzbergen, Germany-based remote monitoring and operations center, which monitors wind turbines in Europe and Asia all day, every day throughout the year.
