Southbank, Victoria, Australia, 2014/09/15 - The inaugural Australian Dairy Farm Investment Forum, a one-day conference in Melbourne, opens today bringing together the nation’s experts on investing in the sector with organisations and individuals interested in new opportunities emerging in dairy.
“Australian dairy has a worldwide reputation for being top quality and our clean, green and safe image is highly prized by the fast-growing markets of Asia,” said Ian Halliday, Managing Director of Dairy Australia which is hosting the Forum.
“The potential for our industry to grow profitably and to supply the burgeoning demand of overseas markets such as China is very real but what is needed is a bigger commitment from investors, so today’s Forum comes at point where we are on the cusp of enormous and positive change for the industry,” said Mr Halliday.
“We have an exceptional line-up of speakers today who will describe the credentials of our industry and list the competitive advantages which make Australian dairy an excellent investment prospect,” he added.
Australian dairy is the fourth largest exporter of dairy in the world accounting for 7% of world trade, and is a $13 billion farm manufacturing industry directly employing 43,000 people. Annual milk output fell from 10.8 billion litres in 2000 to 9.2 billion litres in 2013 and has potential to grow.
“The strong interest shown in the Forum and support from Government and the wider industry has been exceptional,” said John McKillop. Chair of the Australian Dairy Farm Investment Forum Organising Committee and Dairy Australia Director.
“The initial goal was a total of 200 registrations but we have more than 300 with 40 coming from mainland China and this level of interest shows Australian dairy’s time has come,” said Mr McKillop.
Dairy Australia also launched at the Forum a comprehensive Investment Guide available free online to any organisation or individual interested in investing in the sector.
“This new publication titled ‘Investment and the Australian dairy industry will be a helpful, practical booklet for both farmers and investors as it contains a detailed explanation of dairying in Australia to the specifics on models for farm investment.
“I am confident the guide will prove to be an enduring resource for anyone that wants to know what this business is about and where to go to find out more,” he said.
The Australian Minister for Trade and Investment, the Hon. Andrew Robb MP, is opening the event and key presentation and discussion topics for the day include; existing investor and farmer viewpoints on investing in the sector; case studies examining equity sharing arrangements and return on capital potential and industry’s strong history of a commitment to innovation to drive efficiencies and better profit margins on-farm.
