Scientists from Charles River Analytics, a developer of intelligent systems solutions, presented recent research and development efforts at the 16th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCII), which took place from June 22-27, 2014, in Crete, Greece. HCII is an international forum for exchanging scientific information on human-computer interaction. The conference began with three days of tutorials, followed by three days of parallel sessions, poster sessions, and an exhibition. The keynote speech was given by Dr. James R. (Jim) Lewis, Senior Human Factors Engineer from the IBM Software Group on "Usability: Lessons Learned ... and Yet to Be Learned."
Dr. Ryan Kilgore of Charles River presented “Increasing the Transparency of Unmanned Systems: Applications of Ecological Interface Design.” In the presentation, Dr. Kilgore discussed ongoing efforts to address the challenges of supervising teams of heterogeneous unmanned vehicles through the use of demonstrated ecological interface design (EID) principles. The paper will be published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science 8526:378-389.
Dr. Bethany Bracken presented,"Physiological Synchronization is Associated with Narrative Emotionality and Subsequent Behavioral Response," which will also be published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science 8534:3-13. This research focuses on neurophysiological compliance, a correlation of neurophysiological measures (synchronicity) between individuals. Higher compliance among team members is related to better performance, and higher synchronicity occurs during emotional moments of a stimulus. Dr. Bracken presented findings of a study examining whether synchrony may be observable via peripheral nervous system (PNS) activity.
Dr. Victoria Romero served on the board for the Augmented Cognition track. Topics in this track included working memory, creativity, cognition, strategy assessment, machine learning, neural networks techniques, cognitive modeling, perception, emotion, interaction, stress and performance, and privacy best practices. Dr. Romero will also on the board for the 2015 HCII conference in Los Angeles, CA.
